Let's get our nuclear weapons out of Turkey
LA Times ^ | August 11, 2016 | Steve Andreasen

On Feb. 14, 1979, less than one month after the shah of Iran’s exile, the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was overrun by Iranian militants. Within hours, it was returned to U.S. hands. Now on notice that our diplomats were stationed on a vulnerable outpost in a sea of anti-Americanism, the Carter administration considered, but rejected, closing the embassy. In October, President Carter permitted the shah – despised by Iranians and the regime that replaced his – to enter the United States. Days later, Iranians climbed the embassy gates again, took the Americans there hostage and demanded the shah’s return, beginning a 444-day crisis.

There are no do-overs in history, but there are lessons. The 1979 hostage crisis should have taught us the importance of proactively responding to obvious threats and removing vulnerable targets — a lesson that should be applied now if there are U.S. nuclear weapons based in Turkey.

Why did the Obama administration fail so miserably in its handling of the situation in Turkey?

Why is the Obama administration leaving out nukes in Turkey in a vulnerable position where they can be captured by Islamic extremists?

Hussein would rather store in weapons in Iranian custody.

The same mistake was made in Bengazi. Plenty of warning, but we stayed because we still had dealings with the recognized govt.

Everything going as planned.

LOTS of time yet to do serious damage and destruction.

What makes you think we still have them? My bet is Obama has already sold them to the Iranians. A nice account opener for the new "Obama Foundation".

I'm not sure we can afford to be maintaining two global foundations? I expect a mess soon.

From the view of an American, has the Obama administration “succeeded” in any confrontational situation involving the Middle East?

We don’t actually know if the nukes are still in Turkey. I strongly suspect that GWB would have pulled them out. The policy is not to discuss, confirm or deny. However, if they are there, their most vulnerable point will be moving them.

This is not our air base. It is a Turkish base the US operates from. If the Turks want the weapons all they have to do is move the army in and take them. In which case, they are gone and are being disassembled so the interlocks can be removed. In one fell swoop, Turkey would out-nuke all other Middle Eastern nations for the next twenty years. Instant Caliphate, just add nukes.

So Sad.

ISIS will be there shortly to destroy it as they are doing in Syria.

Time to punch back.

I agree that the notion there are nukes there could all be smoke.
I thought they stopped ops out of Incirlik long ago.
They stopped ops out of Cypress early in the Obama admin admin

And why would we store nukes in Turkey?

First of all, the location of nukes in itself is classified.
For obvious reasons.

Obama has not stoodup to anyone from the Middle East. He has no intention of starting now. Maybe he will draw another RED LINE in the sand.

We should have moved those nukes months ago. Taken a few out at a time on a C 130 or something. Now I’m afraid that the admin is worried that if they try to move them the Turks may take the base over and grab the nukes. Erdogan wants Gulen back pretty bad. He could hold the nukes hostage to get the guy. If I can think of it so can Erdogan.
