Dirk Van Tichelt probably didn’t envision one of the greatest days of his life ending in the hospital. But that’s exactly where the Belgian judoka found himself Monday night hours after winning his first-ever Olympic medal.

*snip*

Van Tichelt was reportedly assaulted by a thief on the famous beach, and was struck in the face. He was taken to the hospital after the incident.

A judo champ is confronted by thief. I was kinda hoping for a Hollywood ending here. Didn't happen.

Yeah, bizarre story. Is this Judo guy a pacifist? Or did a sucker punch knock him out?

No rules on the street, tends to screw you up if you are not, for example, used to opponents who are allowed to punch you in the face.

The first question everybody may be asking; Why didn’t an Olympic level Judo Champ fight back against the robber, by using some of his Olympic level skills? My guess is he was simply caught off guard. When you’re in a foreign land, relaxing on the beach with friends, you focus on what’s in front of you. It can happen to anyone.

Or did a sucker punch knock him out?

No matter how good or tough you are, a surprise attack can be devastating.

He might want to take up jiu jitsu.

Of course, there is Brazilian jiu jitsu also.

Judo has its limitations - no gi to get a hold of when facing someone at the beach.

Sport judo, that is, which this guy has obviously put a lot of effort into.

I'll leave it to others to comment on "combat judo" or related martial arts; I claim no credentials in any of them.

Judo is a sport, not a self-defence system.

“Belgian. Maybe a Walloon?”

Since his name is Dutch it’s much, much more likely he is Flemish. Dirk Van Tichelt is as Dutch as you can get.

I just checked. He’s called Flemish by the Flemish. They would know: http://www.flanderstoday.eu/current-affairs/van-tichelt-wins-judo-bronze-rio

Judo is useless in a street fight.

In a street fight, Boxing < Muy Thai < Ju Jitsu < Stick < Knife < Gun < Granade

Sorry for what happened to him but he needs to return his medal.

Only if the assailant used Judo.
