The Ryan thing has hit you hard, but you need to know that he wasn't ever going to NOT keep his house seat. Paul Nehlen would have had to given each voter in that district a crisp, new Benjamin and/or a sex act to successfully primary the guy. It is
WISCONSIN, and that is that.
The place may be famous for cheese and have plenty of farmland, but it has some of the absolute worst political antecedents you will find outside of NY or IL. Progressives of both parties have used it as a petri dish for over a century, and they aren't likely to change.

WI would be (imo, based on your explanation) a place NOT to choose a compatriot ... just because of the ingrained mindset.
