Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told a vast rally in Istanbul that he would approve the return of the death penalty if it was backed by parliament and the public.

He was speaking to at least a crowd of at least a million who had gathered in Turkey's biggest city.

The rally followed last month's failed military coup. Mr Erdogan also said the state would be cleansed of all supporters of the US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. The cleric is blamed by the Turkish government for the attempted uprising. He denies any involvement.

Religious figures and leaders of two of Turkey's three opposition parties attended the rally. The Kurdish party was not invited.

Once again, looking like a bad time to be a Kurd.

We helped them against ISIS but wont help against that piece of #### country, Turkey.

Russia certainly wont help them.

Always get shafted.

I read it too fast and read Turkey "Soup."
Odd, I just had dinner and it's not QUITE time for my bag of popcorn.

When my hubby and I lived in the KSA and worked for ARAMCO we did get to go to Turkey, on an ARAMCO tour. WHAT a fabulous country. They kept us tourists FAR away from any fighting, as they did in Egypt (twice), Syria and Jordan. I loved all three countries...as they treated us tourists VERY well.

Arabs have been fighting each other since there HAVE BEEN Arabs...and Persians have been called "Arabs" for just as long and have HATED it. They are indo-Europeans and have not ONE drop of Semitic blood in them...but it was kind of fun to mistake them ON PURPOSE for Arabs. Lol.

They didn't realize that NO ONE here CARES and for the West all those middle easterners are the same. HAHAHA! Still gives me a chuckle.

As if we would be able to tell the practical difference?

The Turks are ferocious fighters. So are the Kurds. The Turks are NOT Arabs either but are always called that because they are Muslim and the Koran is in Arabic. They speak Turkish.
The Kurds speak Kurdish, which is an Iranian language, so they are closer to Iran than to Turkey. Learned that today.

As for the Russians? They will ALWAYS do what's best for Russia. Always did; always will. Putin is the perfect ethnic eastern European Slav. Ochen harasho!

Nobody has the guts to say "No" to Erdogan now.

Better start worrying about Erdogan more than Putin. You can bet he hasn’t forgotten the Battle of Vienna.

I was THRILLED they bombed the oil truck route to Turkey AND that they killed “moderates” in Syria.

But Russia’s like Hyman Roth.

You can do business with them, you can even respect them, but you can never TRUST them.

VERY good analogy.

The Kurds have been fighting for their "own homeland" for a long, long time. They won't ever get it.
The politics in that area are most complicated. I've looked it up every once in a while and that is ONE thing that won't change: no state for the Kurds.

From Google: When the Kurds in 1992 were granted autonomy by Saddam Hussein, they got only the Kurdish speaking areas which didn't have any oil.
In the last 10 years, the KRG government tried unsuccessfully to get what is rightfully theirs, i.e. to extend the green line to the blue line. It needs to be noted here, that in 1958, the Kurdish blue line would have have been more south comprising all the oil and gas fields.

===============================
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) (Kurdish: حکوومەتی هەرێمی کوردستان‎, Hikûmetî Herêmî Kurdistan; Arabic: حكومة اقليم كردستان‎‎) is the official ruling body of the predominantly Kurdish region of Northern Iraq referred to as Iraqi Kurdistan or Southern Kurdistan.

===============================

They have their own "regional government" but that's not enough for them, I assume.
Look it up and see if YOU see any future for an independent Kurdish state.
