Most presidential campaigns spend their time and money appealing to people who vote regularly in elections. Not Donald Trump. According to a Trump campaign memo obtained by FiveThirtyEight, the campaign pursued a highly unorthodox strategy of courting unlikely voters during the primaries, focusing on people who rarely participate in GOP primary elections. The campaign relied on free media, including Trumps frequent TV appearances, to turn out regular voters, according to the memo.
But survey and voter data shows that Trump won the Republican nomination thanks in large part to Republicans who typically vote in general elections, not by bringing people entirely disconnected from the electoral process to the polls. As Trump heads into the general election, the campaigns thinking during the primaries, and the ad-hoc process by which it built an operation to target and reach out to voters using data, may offer clues about how it will approach voter turnout in the fall. Trumps primary success does not necessarily mean that he can win the general election with a similar strategy.
Based on an internal analysis of our own modeling data and third-party research, and considering the exceptionalism of our candidate, I advise that we put one-hundred percent of our organizational effort into enfranchising the conventionally low propensity voters that support our candidate, the memo from former Trump campaign staffer Matt Braynard begins.

These are voters who do not think ISIS can be defeated with hashtags and do not think that the solution to BLM [Black Lives Matter] murdering cops is for cops to do a better job listening, Braynard said. Pat Buchanan, I think, accurately described these people as conservatives of the heart these are law and order people who are rich in the wisdom of the Old Testament.
If some republicans are so stupid that they would help Hillary by voting for somebody else, they deserve to suffer every agenda Hillary will usher on them for next 35 years and their children and their grand kids via SCOTUS appointments.
My anecdotal evidence is that this strategy was working before they ever had a memo on it.
I know MANY older guys, mostly tradespeople, who haven’t voted in DECADES. They’ve been fired up since last summer, and are 100% faithful to the TRUMP, and absolutely WILL be voting on Nov. 8th. They’ve been licking their chops for a year now. They’ve all registered. They’ve got their wives registered. It’s for real.
Meanwhile, Bernie supporters have been disenfranchised. Some will vote 3rd party. Some will stay home. I have to think very few will vote Hillary.
I hope somebody’s on to it. I was encouraged by the memo linked in the OP, but it’s hard to say. If I were them, I would keep holding rallies in swing states for as long as people keep coming to them, and then work the rally sign-up email lists for Voter ID’s and volunteers over and over until Election Day. He gets 20,000 people a day at his rallies, not all of them will make it to the polls without help, and the margin of victory in many of those states is likely to be far fewer than 20,000.
Good to hear. I think it’s clear that Trump swamped the primaries with voters who don’t traditionally vote in the primaries, but do vote in the general election. Those are in the bag for him in November and there are millions. But there are still others, maybe the sons of the older guys you mentioned, who need to be brought around as well.
“If some republicans are so stupid that they would help Hillary by voting for somebody else, they deserve to suffer every agenda Hillary will usher on them for next 35 years”
The only problem is that they will take us down with them. Perhaps the thought of that is what turns them on.
If he gets 20,000 people to a rally, get their address. email them a walklist for their precinct or put it on a thumb drive on the spot. Have walk group meetings in a living room or McDs.
50% of 20,000 will promise to walk for Trump. 50% of them (5,000) will actually walk. The average dedicated walker between Aug and Nov can net 100 votes.
Do the math. Any candidate wins with an army like this wins.
If Manafort doesn’t understand this, he is unqualified.
The risk is Trum volunteers who think their neighbor is stupid because he is not already for Trump. The volunteer needs to understand that Hilary is the enemy. His neighbor is not the enemy.
Yes, they will get a perverse joy in seeing us all suffer under Hillary’s agenda. They are the proverbial “cut off ears to spite the nose”.
If they’re not voting for Trump then they lie when they claim to be conservative or Republican.
If they truly value their principles they would not allow a corrupt treasonous Clinton to take office - that would not further their principles. They would not allow Clinton to install activist extremist subversive judges to the Supreme Court - that would not further their principles.
If they truly value their principles they would swallow their conceited contrariness, buck up, shut up, do their duty, and vote to stop Clinton by voting for Trump. To do otherwise would not further their principles. And if they truly believe that Clinton is preferable to Trump, that that would be the principled thing to do, then they lie when they claim to be conservative or Republican, obviously their principles lay in the Democrat party.
Public hand wringing and anti-Trump sniping serves no good purpose. If they truly value their principles they better get right PDQ before this country is destroyed. This election is a dividing point in history. You may hear that every cycle but it is absolutely true this time. This is a pivotal election unlike nearly any other in history.

And be scorned and shunned.
