College Students Protest, Alumni’s Fondness Fades and Checks Shrink
NY Times ^ | August 4, 2016 | Anemona Hartocllis

Scott MacConnell cherishes the memory of his years at Amherst College, where he discovered his future métier as a theatrical designer. But protests on campus over cultural and racial sensitivities last year soured his feelings.

Now Mr. MacConnell, who graduated in 1960, is expressing his discontent through his wallet. In June, he cut the college out of his will.

“As an alumnus of the college, I feel that I have been lied to, patronized and basically dismissed as an old, white bigot who is insensitive to the needs and feelings of the current college community,” Mr. MacConnell, 77, wrote in a letter to the college’s alumni fund in December, when he first warned that he was reducing his support to the college to a token $5.

Good. Glad some are showing that actions have consequences.

From the article...

A backlash from alumni is an unexpected aftershock ...

Really?

Some of the comments on the Times site are from alumni of these colleges. And some say that they are liberal, but that they are “old line” liberals, and that they are frustrated at today’s political correctness at their colleges.

The consensus of the comments seems to be that, while these alumni are themselves liberal, they think that today’s political correctness and safe spaces and all that, takes things way too far.

When Jerry Seinfeld won’t do stand up at colleges because of the political correctness, trigger words, micro aggression, etc, you know it’s gone beyond absurd.

Ya, I heard about Seinfeld not going to colleges anymore.

And he’s a key example of what we’re talking about. As is true of many in show business, Seinfeld is liberal. But these inane college kids are too radical for him.

I think Seinfeld said something along the lines of, these college kids don’t have a sense of humor as the rest of us know that concept. They think everything is some sort of micro aggression. They can’t joke about anything because they perceive the joke as somehow being racist or bigoted in some way.

Two years ago I did the same to my hard-left, liberal arts, small college alma mater. $20 token donation per year (after many years of much more from me). I’m guessing they are feeling more pain than is being let on.

“Unexpected!!”

It’s an indictment of the insulation that exists in the ivory towers that they don’t understand their actions have consequences in the real world, or that they could be perceived as offensive, too.

If you think about it, is there an institution that has failed the United States more over the past 50 years than higher education?

I'd say it's a tie between them and the judiciary, the media, Hollywood, congress, the business community, elementary school teachers, public sector unions, the television industry, lawyers, the IRS, the EPA, the commerce department, the department of education, the leftist intelligentsia, let's see have I left anyone out?

The old-school white liberals have basically been lumped with Nazis by the blacktivists; who expects them to fund these attacks on themselves? For fifty years taxpayers have been doing the same, but they weren’t voluntary contributions.

Elementary school education; higher education still offers something to serious students (and good feelings for people that just want four more years of high school).
