The Republican nominee, Donald Trump, has declined to endorse the re-election campaign of the House speaker, Paul Ryan, the highest-ranking member of his party in Washington, as divisions intensified in the GOP.
I like Paul, but these are horrible times for our country, Trump said in an interview with the Washington Post, a publication that is still banned from Trumps campaign events.
We need very, very strong leadership. And Im just not quite there yet. Im not quite there yet.
The Republican nominee also refused to back Senator John McCain, the partys 2008 nominee, in his bid for re-election in addition to Ryan, the most powerful elected Republican in the country.
Both Ryan and McCain are longtime critics of many of Trumps remarks, but both have said they would support the Republican nominee in the general election. Ryan, in particular, needed coaxing to eventually support Trump, citing his concerns about the candidates proposed ban on Muslims entering the US. Eventually Ryan not only endorsed Trump but presided over his nomination at the Republican national convention in Cleveland.
Ryans campaign responded through a spokesman, Zack Roday, who said: Neither Speaker Ryan nor anyone on his team has ever asked for Donald Trumps endorsement. And we are confident in a victory next week regardless.

Paybacks are a bytch aren’t they Ryan?
Hey Donald, put the final nail in Ryan’s political coffin and endorse Nehlen - a guy you can deal with!
NOT ‘No’.
But.........
“HELL NO!!!”
Dem/MSM playbook.
Hey Donald, put the final nail in Ryans political coffin and endorse Nehlen - a guy you can deal with!
Ryan is an obstacle to you agenda, he is for open borders, TPP, amnesty, bringing more muzzies here. This is the perfect chance to get rid of him. And if he survives he will know your not going to pussyfoot around with him.
It's merely another controversy ginned up by the press. It is supported with false accusations coming from unnamed sources - although Trump did reply when asked ...
Transcript of Trump interview with WaPo's Rucker <- well worth the time to read
Cool music to accompany History Repeating
It is the primary not the general election
Trump won his primary and Ryan still didn’t endorse
Let Ryan win the primary and then we will see
Thanks for the link. Trump was just using Ryan’s words against him. He is just not there yet is another Trump joke. You have to be from the NYC metro area to enjoy it fully.
Paul Ryan spoke at the convention and endorsed Trump if I remember correctly.
AFTER Trump was the nominee... Ryan isn’t even the GOP nominee yet.
Trump won the primary
Ryan has yet to win his and Trump is under no obligation to endorse in a Primary
Who did Ryan endorse in the GOP Presidential primary
But even if Ryan loses, he can remain Speaker, right?
Trump should actively campaign against Democrat Paul Ryan.
Good point.
I think he could remain technically.
Editor’s note: NBC News is reporting that key Republicans close to Donald Trump are plotting an intervention after what many pundits are calling a “disastrous” 48 hours, and party leaders are questioning whether Trump can stay at the top of the ticket without consequences for the GOP as a whole. Sources have told NBC News that RNC chair Reince Priebus, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich are among those trying to talk Trump into a reset of his campaign. In the last few days, Trump has repeatedly criticized a Gold Star family, declared he “always wanted” a Purple Heart, and refused to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan and Sen. John McCain. Some Republicans are reportedly considering what would happen to the GOP ticket if Trump dropped out, but there has been no indication Trump is considering leaving the race. - Rebecca

“Paul Nehlen sure came out of nowhere.”
So did Sir Donald.
“Trump has repeatedly criticized a Gold Star family, declared he always wanted a Purple Heart, and refused to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan and Sen. John McCain.”
Good. That’s exactly what I would have wanted him to do.
Those political animals planning an “intervention” need to be fired. The only mistake I see Trump making (IMO) is in allowing members of our irredeemably corrupt political class near him.
It shows us that we are in the most dire, critical times of our nation’s history.
NBC reporting........ ugh. Saw Paul Manifort (awesome dude) this AM. Said “news to me” about some intervention. Hogwash it is.
Any chance Ryan could lose?
