During a town hall meeting in Nevada, Mike Pence was challenged on his support for Donald Trump despite Trumps comments over the weekend criticizing a gold star family. Pence handled the situation well, first calming the crowd and then offering his respect to the person asking the question and then to the Khan family.
You have a son in the military, how do you tolerate his disrespect? the woman asked, referring to Trumps comments over the weekend criticizing Khans family. Before she even finished her question the crowd began to boo. Pence waved for them to settle down. Its all right, Pence said adding, Folks, thats what freedom looks like and thats what freedom sounds like. This brought a round of applause.
Pence turned back toward the woman, who had taken her seat, and said, Let me just say first I want to honor your sons service to the country and your familys service to the country. I truly do. This brought another round of applause.
I know this has been much in the news of late, in the last few days, but as I said last night as Donald Trump said Saturday night, Captain Khan is an American hero and we honor him and honor his family as we do all gold star families in this country, Pence said.
Pence then went beyond the talking points by adding some detail. The story of Captain Khan is an incredibly inspiring story. June 8th, 2004 he would fall in Iraq
an explosive device in a taxi, Pence said. He continued,He was awarded medals, posthumously, because like any great leader he
the accounts of that were that Captain Khan moved people out of the way, told them stay back and he went toward the danger. Honestly, again, Captain Khan is an American hero, Pence

If the polling is honest, how is it that Sundance, at theconservativetreehouse, predicted several weeks worth of it, in advance, with pinpoint precision? As Sundance pointed out, he couldn’t possibly have been so unerringly accurate unless the polls were/are rigged.
Instead, we're talking about something other than Hillary. Just like Hillary's handlers want. FReepers pay attention to the details. Unfortunately, the general public does not. General public will determine the election, not us, and they follow the media narrative, which, until the gift of Khan came along, was focused on crooked Hillary. It's a game of momentum. Trump allowed himself to lose the big MO. He needs to stay focused on what's important.
No, I don’t watch the polling. Most useless info ever generated.
Hillary’s emails became a temporarily dead subject when Comey listed her crimes and issued her a Get Out Of Jail card. It’s not forgotten though and there are more shoes waiting to drop about that.
Dealing with Khan is focusing on Hillary. Khan is nothing more than Hillary’s tool that the MSM enthusiastically picked up on. Trump has now all but finished him off by his actions.
How many times does Trump have to slay these paper dragons before you hand wringers see how he does it?
Yeah they were. It was so flagrant that they couldn’t avoid talking about it. Trump gave them a gift. Hope he learns from Pence on how to deal with these deliberate distractions.
True!
Oh?
What scandals and lies were the media talking about?
I certainly don't see any slam in there, and not in the entire exchange with Stephanoplis.
I haven't heard much in the press on this [silent mom] angle either, other than them demonstrating that she can talk, and does talk, and gave an interview. The manufactured outrage is on a false claim, that Trump disparaged the son's service, or was disrespectful of the family's anguish!
That said, Trump did inject that into the conversation out of thin air, and unless he knows where he wants to drive that point, he's better off not raising it.
“What the Hell is the point of standing up for people like you?”
Your reading comprehension is about as good as your ability to not have a public meltdown.
I don’t have a clue, but this is an recent “exchange” that I’ve had:
(From the Official VFW website)
WASHINGTON Presidential candidate Donald J. Trump has a history of lashing out after being attacked, but to ridicule a Gold Star Mother is out-of-bounds, said the new national commander of the near 1.7 million-member Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and its Auxiliary.
Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression, said Brian Duffy, of Louisville, Ky., who was elected July 27 to lead the nations oldest and largest major war veterans organization.
There are certain sacrosanct subjects that no amount of wordsmithing can repair once crossed, he said. Giving ones life to nation is the greatest sacrifice, followed closely by all Gold Star families, who have a right to make their voices heard.
(My letter to them)
I am a Life Member, Past Post Commander, Adjutant, and Quartermaster.
A recent statement by National Commander Brian Duffy regarding Donald Trump “berating a Gold Star family member” caught my attention. Can you enlighten me as to the exact statement that Mr. Trump made that “berated” Ms. Ghazala Khan? Can you also point me to a similar statement by Commander Duffy denouncing Ms. Clinton for refuting as dishonest the relatives of Chris Stevens, Glen Doherty, Sean Smith, and Tyrone Woods.
The evidently uneven treatment of public statements made by presidential candidates displays a preferential attitude that I believe is unbecoming of what I have always thought to be an organization which is non-partisan (per Article VII, Sec. 702 of our By-Laws) in political matters and mimics the bias as displayed by the mainstream media exemplified by MSNBC which hailed Mr. Khans speech as stirring and moving, yet, denounced the RNC as manipulative for partisan gain for allowing Ms. Smith to express her similar grief of loss.
I expect more from our Veterans of Foreign Wars.
How does that ring with you?
Sincerely,
HLB
Hillary is the enemy. Everything else is static. Trump only needs to fight one battle. The base is behind Trump and so are independents. Let Pence deal with the GOPe and scum like Khan. Having a member of the establishment counter punch the establishment will be more effective anyway. They are baiting Trump and he has to be disciplined enough to ignore it. He’s above this nonsense anyway. He’s a big idea guy focused on making America great again. It’s a winning narrative but he has to stay on message.
Again, I really hope the folks in the Trump campaign aren’t as loony and impressionable as people here.
>How many times does Trump have to recant his one-time suggestion of a temporary travel ban on Muslims?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/donald-trump-muslim-ban_us_5771a980e4b0dbb1bbbbb6cc
In real time, I believe during a debate, Ted Cruz pointed out that a travel ban on “Muslims” wouldn’t pass muster, and suggested instead a travel ban on persons from countries that have lost control of significant portions of their territory to terrorist groups. This would be expected, since Cruz is a constitutional lawyer. Trump isn’t a lawyer, or an engineer, or a chef, or a pilot. He’s a businessman. He hires people with such expertise and skills. The next day, Trump retracted - if that is even the proper word given that it was never a formal proposal - the temporary travel ban on Muslims, and essentially endorsed the Cruz position. This wasn’t the first time Trump recalibrated a position and, while he has been criticized for speaking too freely, that’s both a strength and a weakness of his.
I don’t hold the father of the slain soldier responsible for keeping up with all the ins and outs of the political process. But, I do hold the Democrats and the media responsible for misrepresenting Trump’s position on a travel ban for their political advantage.
Not all the polls are rigged, and Trump has dropped in all of them. Some of it is tied to the convention bounce candidates almost always get, but some of it is tied to the Khan kerfuffle. There are a lot of undecided voters out there and a lot of voters considering third party. These are ripe for the picking by Trump if he stays on message. If.......
I don’t see the base behind Trump.
Looks to me like about 2/3 of the base and 99% of the party is attacking Trump.
That’s a fair point. Here’s an angle to consider. Kahn spoke at Hillary’s shindig, and looked like he might be effective. What would make him less effective? Perhaps an outburst of the unhinged, perpetual rage with which most muslim men seem to seeth?
How do you enrage (even further) an average muslim man?
Suggest in any way, shape or form that his wife is his equal.
Trump did this, and Kahn got angry. It’s doubtful many undecided voters found this appealing. Angry muslim men tend to be offputting—especially with terrorism at an all time high.
Just a thought.
Well, your hopes are dashed because those that would parrot the dinosaur media’s lies about Donald Trump on FR are indeed borderline lunatics at best, though dumber than rocks in any event.
I agree, and for that Trump is being accused of being mentally unstable. He just won't roll over and say Hillary will make a fine president the way McCain and Romney did when running against Obama.
Frustrating to see people on FR buying into the media and the Dem's criticism of Trump.
How on earth did Trump manage to roundly defeat 16 professional politicians in the primary without your relentless advice?
It isn't much different, other than the differences one would expect based on the person being confrontational. Trump was confronted by Stephanoplis, Pence was confronted by a citizen mother.
Both were confronted, asked to justify some sort of lie - Trump was asked about "Trump would not have allowed Khan to immigrate to the US," and Pence was asked to respond to "Trump has disrespected our nation's armed forces and veterans. And his disrespect for Mr. Khan ..."
These issues are going to continue to come and go, and Trump cannot control it. The press manufactures this crap out of whole cloth, and the people go along with it. It's little different from a stampede or riot, reason is literally out the window, in nearly all of public discourse.
-- If Trump had responded like Pence, Khan would never have seen the light of day and the press would still be focused on the emails, the DNC alliance against Bernie, and Hillary's four Pinocchio's. --
You have no way of knowing that. What action did Trump take to create the "Trump or Manafort revised the party platform to favor Russia" story? The press could give Khan 100% of its coverage from today until the election, if it wanted to. Nothing Trump says or does can change that.
