PITTSBURGH —Starting Monday, Pennsylvania's 6 percent state sales tax will be extended to digital downloads and streaming subscription services like Netflix and Hulu.
The measure was included in a revenue package passed by state lawmakers and signed by Gov. Tom Wolf to fill a $1.3 billion hole in the state's new $31.5 billion budget.
If a customer uses an account with a Pennsylvania billing address, the tax will be imposed. Businesses are responsible for collecting the tax and remitting it to the state Department of Revenue.

This state is well on its way to becoming Illinois.
They try and balance the budget with smoke, mirrors and gimmicks. And yet the spending just goes on....and on....and on.....and on.....
Nope. I won’t collect Pennsylvania sales tax. Not going to happen. Bite me, Democrats!
Cigarettes also went up a dollar a pack tax today here in Pennsylvania.
Looks like the state of Pennsylvania wants to get their grubby claws into everything.
At least it isnt a “Netflix and chill” tax.
Although I just may have given them an idea...
I live in Pittsburgh and this totally sucks. The people here kept voting in the damn Democrats. Then they wonder why their jobs are being cut. Onc of my relatives just got their job cut. Lifelong Dem. They don’t understand that when taxes go up, people order less of that product. They go out less when a ten percent tax on poured alcohol in imposed on local bars. People consequentlyget cut from jobs in restaurants and bars. Duh!
An extra buck on cigarettes? The mob will have a field day on bootleg cigarettes.
These clowns tried to claim they “balanced” the budget on a cigarette tax, a Netflix tax, and some insane projection that casino revenues are going to DOUBLE this year.
And it was mostly Republicans who did it.
$47 million to the state. It’s not enough to cover anything significant. It’s just an in your face..., “See, we can do anything we want to you, and you can’t do a damned thing about it!”, ...tax.
The GOP legislature passed this tax on consumers.

Well, the only good news is that they stopped Wolf's ruinous tax plan for the fraccing industry as well as his insane spending plans.
These taxes are gimmicks and while still being ridiculous they won't destroy an industry.
Democrats here in Pittsburgh sure have done an astute job of multigenerational brainwashing.

I remember when they tried selling that poured drink tax as harmless. Those taxes are kind of harmless to big companies ... you’re already paying a premium for beer at chain restaurants. The bartenders and waitresses get screwed over since the disposable income goes to pay the tax instead of tips for the bartenders and waitresses.
Small, mom-and-pop hole in the walls have been getting beaten silly since the poured drink tax. Many middle aged / older people that go to those bars prefer draft beer and shots vs. bottled beer. Plus there’s additional accounting that needs to be done (keep in mind that some of these owners just paid taxes ... now they need infrastructure to track poured vs. non-poured booze, etc.)
Bottom line is that those that depend on tips and small businesses get screwed the hardest by these seemingly “harmless” taxes.
I’d invest in an ecig company in PA with that new cigarette tax they just passed. I think cigarettes will be up to $8 a pack in the Pittsburgh metro area.
Pennsylvania can’t even clear the roadkill off their highways. I guess they laid those people off too.
The thing they REALLY want is to go to a progressive income tax. So they can bracket it and start charging higher income earners a higher rate.
It really sticks in their craw that our State Constitution prohibits this practice. Now the Dems have managed so stuff our State Supreme Court with wide-eyed Liberals (by actually running a CASH LOTTERY for voters who showed up in Philadelphia!) So there is a chance that the new Supreme Court may find our State Constitution to be Unconstitutional.
