According to that Wikipedia piece, the offense of common scold among the descriptions of disorderly conduct was not removed from New Jersey law until 1972.

The state of Delaware had the public whipping post until around the 50s.

I just checked Delaware Archives blog. The last whipping in Delaware was in 1952; and whipping was removed from the penal code in 1972.

Whether things have gotten better or worse SINCE then, I’ll leave to you to decide.
