The monolithic sub-straight is intended to run red hot and the triangular channels are to provide surface area for the unspent fuel to finish burning. The platinum and other materials embedded in the sub-straight are to facilitate the CO to CO2 conversion.
You really can’t filter the exhaust like inlet air. The most you can do is complete the combustion cycle.
