Holy Smokes that’s a tough situation in those days. The life of a one armed soldier... Just read a great article on him. Lost the arm early in his career — wow. amazing what he accomplished after that.
So sad that many of the union and Confederate guys who served together in the Mexican War then fought each other as enemies in the Civil War. Looks like he and his uncle fought together in the Mex War. Have read several good books on the subject but again had never draw the connection between the 2 Kearnys
See they stopped the civil War battle of Chantilly for both sides to honor the falling of Phillip ....Robert E. Lee who had only been a Captain in The Mex War sent a letter of condolence to Kearny’s Family. Looks like they had been friends in Mexico together ?
Quite a story .... The One Armed Devil !
I was not familiar that there were other distinguished Kearny’s w military careers.
If you have not followed much about his uncle Stephen’s adventures he is a historical figure worth reading about too.
He was similarly restless like Phillip it seems and sometimes took action ahead of actual orders coming.
Fascinating history; Stephen was born in Newark NJ. Is this tidbit from Wikipedia true?
“While moving his forces through the native Pueblos town of Embudo north of Sante Fe, Kearny oversaw the burning of a church packed with locals who were inevitably burned alive in the fire.”
Yikes; if it isn’t it should be removed...
