Fascinating history; Stephen was born in Newark NJ. Is this tidbit from Wikipedia true?

“While moving his forces through the native Pueblos town of Embudo north of Sante Fe, Kearny oversaw the burning of a church packed with locals who were inevitably burned alive in the fire.”

Yikes; if it isn’t it should be removed...

I never ran across that episodebut but read quite a bit about how forceful he became when he was assigned temporary control of California.

The US government eventually sent John C Fremont to relieve him of duty and Stephen refused to step down causing quite a problem for his career later

He was definately not afraid to use fear to set the stage for what it was going to be like under his leadership.

Yesterday when I was reading about Philip I ran across a biography on Stephen that I’m probably going to have to order now.

So maybe you should buy a biography on Philip if there is one and then we’ll swap books when we’re both done.

The book on Stephen got 4 1/2 stars on Amazon so is probably a good read. Going to order today and will soon see if they mention the part about the church
