Agreed, on the whole they were less hostile than other regions The California indians were treated poorly by the Spaniards and later by the U S but many of those tribes were not saints to each other either.

I read an account of the expedition of Gaspar de Portolo in 1769 as he explored present day Southern California, and the natives were described as very friendly. They greeted the Spaniards, fed them, and asked them to live among the villagers. It was surprisingly tranquil.
