I read an account of the expedition of Gaspar de Portolo in 1769 as he explored present day Southern California, and the natives were described as very friendly. They greeted the Spaniards, fed them, and asked them to live among the villagers. It was surprisingly tranquil.
Some South Pacific Islanders even thru in a few young women ... For the new world discoverers it seemed to get better the further west they went.
