Donald Trump said Tuesday he would support raising the federal minimum wage to $10 an hour, a departure from his previous assertion that wages are "too high."
The Republican presidential nominee was pressed to provide a specific number by Fox News anchor Bill O'Reilly, who said, "there has to be a federal minimum wage."
Trump initially dismissed that suggestion.
"There doesn't have to be," Trump said. "I would leave it and raise it somewhat. You need to help people. I know it's not very Republican to say."
"Ten bucks?" O'Reilly asked.
"I would say 10. I would say 10," Trump agreed. "But with the understanding that somebody like me is going to bring back jobs. I don't want people to be in that $10 category for very long. But the thing is, Bill, let the states make the deal."

[But there would be a whole lot fewer jobs for illegal immigrants, so we would need to tighten up on immigration.]
Knowing how Trump’s mind works, that was what he was thinking when he came up with that!
According to the Feds inflation is 2%/yr.
That’s what I thought also. How would this affect the invader + jihad-MSA workforce? Would it help tighten the noose on foreign labor... I think this is an indirect attack on freedom principles but in order for TRUMP to win I don’t give a rat’s ass because we are in grave danger. Germany is setting up an insider police force to deal with daily jihad carnage. It is here too....
“Most employers are already starting new hires at 9 to 10 to start...
So no big deal here...”
Yeah, but when the minimum wage is $10, that “starting” will have to increase by another 50%, so it will be $15. The point is that the FLOOR will be set at $10, so it keeps inflating. THINK!
Some people are worth less.
Its refreshing to see a President who has respect for the federal nature of the Republic. Trump is entitled to his personal view but he is correct that this is entirely for states to decide.
What a refreshing change from Obozzo and Bad Boy Bush
I personally think the Minimum Wage should be ZERO.
Ask anyone outside of the FR Bubble if there should be a Minimum Wage and 9 out of 10 will say yes. That is the reality we face.
Trump was responding to Bernie Lying. He also said that the States have to decide since the Cost of Living varies from State to State.
If ANYONE thinks the Federal Minimum Wage will ever be eliminated please let me know when you start breeding Unicorns, I would like to buy one.
The first sentence of the excerpt certainly was the authors words. After that O’Reilly was the only one who used the term “Federal” minimum wage. Trump said he thought $10 was a more reasonable number than $15 and then made clear he thought it was the States who should make the decision as to the amount and whether there should be one at all.
The individual State would determine the minimum wage. Trump supports a $10 minimum wage BUT it is up to the individual State to determine its minimum wage.
I bet you actually believe that.
Worse, you miss the real problem.
We're not up to our ears in debt because Fedzilla doesn't take in enough revenue. We're in debt up to our ears because Fedzilla spends too much money on things it has no Constitutional authority to do.
It's not the government's place to "take care of people".
Sounds to me like he’s saying that 10 is reasonable if there’s a federal minimum, but to him it’s a state issue.
LOL This hilarious!
“It’s not the government’s place to “take care of people”.”
Sounds awfully like the Republican version of the Obama-phone.
Thank you for reminding me why we’re probably screwed even if we do manage to get Trump elected.
It would be nice to have a president who respects the 10th Amendment.
A 20% tariff balances the budget. Mathematical fact. More tariffs and less income taxes are the secret. The founders knew what they were doing.
Besides, it is ridiculous to say end the minimum wage. That will never happen and is political suicide to suggest. Trump and I hope all of us want him to win the election. Minimum wage is here to stay and is going to go up. Trump gave a reasonable answer. Would some NeverTrumpers prefer Clinton imposing it from the federal level say with a $15 minimum wage?! And, remember clearly, Trump has hired/fired people, he knows what it takes to make payroll. He's not just playing with other people's money.
This is what actually trying to win an election looks like. He’s effectively taken the minimum-wage issue off the table — and, at the same time, made absolutely no promises to actually increase the minimum wage (leave it to the states). If Trump had given a crystal-pure conservative response (e.g. “let the markets set the wages”), you can be certain that the Dems would turn it into a wedge issue. No LIVs would be aware that it’s up to the states.
Once again, Trump, the political wizard, has made an issue disappear, right before your eyes.
I’ve never thought of a high minimum wage in this context before.
Thanks for the incite!
