Allegations of military abuses in the south, home to a longstanding Muslim insurgency are nothing new.

But there has been a sharp increase in the use of criminal defamation laws against government critics in recent years, BBC correspondent Jonathan Head says.

Rights groups condemned the charges.

The trio face up to two years in prison if found guilty of defaming the military, and a further three years if they are found to have violated the country's computer crimes act.

To my knowledge ,torture , usually mild torture , is SOP for almost all Thai police and I would assume the military buys into the same techniques and ethos . You will not find a single police station in Thailand where hoods and sand filled socks or hoses are not found . Why ? Thais lie... Like most perps , they lie their asses off if apprehended for anything , and the police use these techniques , or even the common knowledge of the threat of these techniques , to break through the layers of lying . I hear it works very well . Of course there has to be abuse on the police/mil side as well . But when you are getting blown up , or beheaded , as in the South , certain measures may be justified . At least they are not soft and squishy on terrs , like some nations I know of .
