The solution favored among ranchers is infused with a fatalism that nothing will change government being government, and the cartels always one step ahead so why bother. But here it goes:
Intensive, round-the-clock patrols along the border are required for a fence or wall to work; otherwise, those determined to cross will always find a way. But, they argue, if you have boots on the ground, you will have no need for anything so beautiful as the Great Wall of Trump.
It is easy, from a distance, to dismiss the ranchers along the border as right-wing Chicken Littles whose complaints hint of racism. Too easy, in fact.
Ranchers will say they saw people with backpacks trekking across their property last week, last night, early this morning. Some will say they have grudging agreements of access with drug cartels, as long as trespassers stay far from their homes. Dogs bark, motion lights flicker, things go missing.
The unnerving has become everyday life, Mr. Ashurst says, and then he asks my colleague and me where we live. Metropolitan New York, we answer.
Nice, Mr. Ashurst says, still scowling. But how would you like it? he asks, referring to the ebb-and-flow parade of strangers, some armed, past his door. Do you think youre more important than the poor moron who has the misfortune to live along the border?
True, the overall number of migrants has plummeted in the last 15 years or so. Here, in what the Border Patrol categorizes as the Tucson sector about 90,000 square miles, with 262 miles of border there were 63,397 arrests in the 2015 fiscal year, compared with 10 times that in the 2001 fiscal year.

Buck shot and dogs help
Ask the Israelis if walls work. Even their wall requires ground patrols and electronic monitoring. But, it is definitely effective.
ofc, anyone who knows a thing about it knows that there must be sufficient BP personnel in support of any kind of border barrier. But a big tall wall is much easier for personnel to work with than nothing at all, or than some fence that is easily punctured at many many points.

Is that because they aren’t arresting them?
Electrify it.
NY Times says “Resistance is futile”.
Gun control won’t stop criminals from getting firearms, but liberals pursue that goal regardless.
A wall may not stop all migration, but it certainly will help.
A wall of LEAD?
Razor wire, automated heavy machine guns (used on the N/S Korean boarder), layered mine fields are a plus.
Thanks Mister Democrat rancher; but we have to disagree. Ask the Israelis if a wall works.
Of course walls work. Just look at history. The NYT is a desperate concern troll and this article reads like a poorly written editorial, as usual.
Not having a wall vs. having a wall - hmmm I wonder which will work better to keep the heroin and drug cartels, etc. out of our country ... (DUH)
forgot to add - just look at history - the Berlin wall was rather effective - just ask the Germans.
I have heard that Trump wants a formal declaration of war.
If that is passed, we can then put military units along the border to keep it closed.
We have the means to keep people from crossing our borders without permission, what we lack is the will.
They are right, a fence will not stop all illegals.
But if the wall will not work, I cannot help but wonder why the Yuma, AZ sector, where the wall, mandated by congress over a decade ago is finished has the lowest illegal count along the Arizona border.
I can understand the frustration of these ranchers.
Just a couple of years back a jury in Tuscon awarded millions of dollars to illegals that he had detained for the Border patrol. That rancher lost his ranch.
THAT is the real reason the rancher no longer carries a firearm. My guess is, he figures if he is killed, his family still has the ranch.
Issue Constitutionally authorized Letters of Marque to private citizens to patrol the border.
A minor fence will work, IF a declaration is made and enforced that unauthorized border crossers will be considered invaders and shot on sight.
