Probably. At least they wouldn't be getting the attention they've been getting. Things like this prove their point.
Sounds like the cop was an idiot, if this is the case, fire him and charge him with some kind of minimal felony so he can’t own a gun but won’t do time in prison. Then buy the victim a nice facility where he can continue his good works. AND make a very big public apology.
