I remember visiting family in Edgard when I was a kid. Back then, the poor blacks lived in dilapidated old houses or tar-paper shacks. However, there were visible family units - most of the men worked the cane fields during the day and came home at night.

Now the tar-paper shacks are gone and some of the old river-frontage farmland has been turned into subdivision-style trailer parks (like where this happened). I wonder how many residents there actually have jobs these days.
