Cruz has painted himself into an unenviable corner. He’s made Trump out to be such a monster in human form, it would look unprincipled for Ted to endorse him.
The only way he could manage it would be something like, ‘Yes, I said Trump is a pathological liar, and he is. However, Hillary is an even *worse* pathological liar. Vote Trump!’
“I’m a Texan, and we have a lot of oil. You are from New York City, and you have lots of water. While we may be as separate as those two things, we are joined in a union of brothers, and that makes us family. And I have seen that through that city exterior, a fellow American that has devoted himself, heart and soul, to the preservation of our freedom, the guarantee of our security, and to the renewal the promise of our nation to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that is for me all the reason that I will stand with you and fight to defeat the Clinton machine...”
Something like that will work.
“The only way he could manage it would be something like ‘Yes, I said Trump is a pathological liar, and he is. However, Hillary is an even *worse* pathological liar. Vote Trump!”
No, Cruz should not say anything like that. He should say that it was a rough primary, that harsh criticisms were traded back and forth, that he vowed to fight to the bitter end.
Then he should say yesterday’s vote of 1725 delegates for Donald j Trump marks that bitter end, the official end of the nomination contest. He should say that Trump won a resounding victory yesterday and is now the undisputed nominee of our party. That we should now all put aside any bitterness from the primary contest and do everything in our power to support our nominee in his glorious fight against the evil beast to win the White House.
“Cruz has painted himself into an unenviable corner. Hes made Trump out to be such a monster in human form, it would look unprincipled for Ted to endorse him.”
Goodness. Read this thread and read the loony slanders still being posted about Cruz, who is a good an honorable man.
Trump and Trump supporters painted, and continue, to paint that corner, just as Cruz painted Trump.
Trump was the victor. The normal course of things is for the victor to extend the olive branch and disavow some of the worst things said. We saw a little of that a couple days ago since Trump now says Cruz is a “good guy.”
Whether that is sufficient to sooth the bad blood remains to be seen.
I hope it was sufficient. This is the chance for Cruz to be the bigger man and go ahead and endorse Trump despite the continuing vitriol, but perhaps not.
