A construction crane toppled over on the Tappan Zee Bridge Tuesday, injuring five people and creating a "traffic nightmare" over the Hudson River, officials said.
Traffic in both directions came to a halt just after noon Tuesday when a crane working to build the new Tappan Zee due to open in 2018 and replace the current crossing fell onto the existing bridge, according to the New York Thruway Authority.
At least three drivers and two bridge workers were injured, the Journal News reported. None of their injuries are life-threatening.
South Nyack-Grand View Police Chief Brent Newbury told the newspaper he expects a traffic nightmare." Aerial video showed parts of the crane lying across all lanes as lines of cars and trucks sat stopped.

They just slid on down the Appalachians.
"As an aside a barge crashed into the bridge several months ago. If I recall correctly there were casualties."...."The traffic backup will be a major nightmare, no question.""-BluH2o
Also:
The accident in May caused traffic back ups which affected a family member's travels - despite having no interaction with the Tappan Zee bridge. A trip to Kennedy airport normally takes 90 minutes - door-to-door. On that day, it took 5 hours to arrive at the airport - the delay resulted in missing the international flight.
So you’re saying that in New York, the less you build the more it costs?

What did she say?

Ha, ha! Good one!
From the pictures it looks like they might have been erecting the crane. Normally they don’t fail like that. Very windy for crane operations today.

Now I know everything is bigger and better in Texas, but you might be surprised at just how many 100+ yr. old bridges there are still in use in NYC

I’ve spent a while in NYC and agree with you, although the TZ is not in the city. I’m just commenting on TODAY’S quality of design and work in general and applying the same skepticism to this project.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe they got the best designers and the best materials and the best work force who used the best judgment and the best and most honest inspectors and give it the best maintenance for 100 years. NY State does have a reputation for trying to do things right.
The crane collapsing leaves some worry, though. Lots of that in NYC. Yes, lots of cranes, but people not doing their job and no one catching the mistakes is usually the cause.
I’m thinking about the corroding steel on the new Oakland Bay Bridge, the collapsing ceiling panels in the Big Dig tunnel, the screw up in the Seattle tunnel, which obviously did not have the best of the best. Makes you wonder what other problems are hiding that will require a rebuild long before 100 years.
I hope it does last 100 years or more. It was a cool ride across the old one when traffic was light. I’d like to ride the new one some day. Looks awesome.
Two words. Robert Moses.
the Power Broker by Robert Caro is the best political book I have ever read. Amazing how much that guy shaped NYS and the City especially. Now they are ripping the Parkway up in The Falls!
Had a very cordial talk with Doris Kearns after she wrote her LBJ book, this was back in 1977.. You could tell she was “impressed” by LBJ...
No doubt!! I guess working for LBJ was warlike, though.
