Mike Pence, who has served as governor of Indiana since 2013, will be Donald J. Trump’s running mate on the Republican presidential ticket. Mr. Pence, a staunch social conservative, was elected in 2000 to the United States House of Representatives, where he served in the leadership of the party. Here is a look at his stand on important issues.
Immigration
Mr. Pence is opposed to granting amnesty for people who have come to the United States without authorization. He has supported increased border security measures, strict enforcement of laws prohibiting unauthorized residents from working in the United States and a government-run guest worker program that would place prospective immigrants with employers who cannot find American workers to fill open jobs. Earlier this year, he sought to bar the resettlement of Syrian refugees in his state.
Gay Rights
Mr. Pence, who has supported numerous legislative efforts to ban same-sex marriage in Indiana, was at the center of the national debate over so-called religious freedom laws that critics said could make it easier for businesses to refuse service to gay couples. As a congressman, Mr. Pence opposed federal funding that would support treatment for people suffering from H.I.V. and AIDS, unless the government simultaneously invested in programs to discourage people from engaging in same-sex relationships. He also resisted changes to hate-crime laws that that would have included acts against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and he opposed the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a Clinton administration policy that allowed closeted L.G.B.T. people to serve in the military.

I’m sure they will but keep in mind: Trump’s positions are variable.
Another “wall-flower” for VP. So predictable.
Pence was rated ‘A’ by GUNOWNERS of AMERICA’ in 2010. So he is not a newcomer to support for RKBA. Good selection in terms of Second Amendment.
It’s clear that Trump will need Democrat crossover votes to win, and win big.
Does a hard-right pick like Pence change that?

Unlike some FReepers who seem to know better, I trust Trumps judgement to pick the best person who fits his needs.
Ceremonial, perhaps, but traditionally the VP choice sends a lot of messages about the candidate. Highly symbolic but a big chunk of what is playing out is symbolic. Sometimes the VP is an attack dog, sometimes an olive branch and almost always a regional counterbalance. It says a lot about the thinking and actual methodology of a candidate, really the first genuine action or choice, as opposed to talk, that they make in the campaign.

I am happy with Trump’s positions being variable. That is best and I love that it confuses and irritates the media and Democrats. Us regular folks understand Trump just fine.

On the gun front, I am looking for relaxation of the federal law on suppressors - they are not some evil magic, as has been the view from Hollyweird since the 1930s, they are exactly the same as a muffler on a car or motorcycle - an attempt to increase civility and lessen hearing problems. These should be utterly removed from the NFA. [Of course, I think that the entire NFA is a gross violation of the 2nd Amendment and should be repealed in its entirety, but that isn’t politically realistic - especially during a campaign - at this point. We lost the ability to freely exercise our gun rights bit-by-bit, and that’s how we will probably have to get them back. Let’s start with suppressors].
Also, I’d love to see Title 18, Section 922(o) go the way of the dinosaurs. It is absurd that one cannot buy a full auto that is less than 30 years old. My grandfathers could have (and didn’t, DAMN IT) walked into the local hardware store, plunked down some cash, and walked out with a Tommy Gun, no questions asked. A right is a right, across all periods of time and across all spaces within the country - so why can’t I do what my grandfathers could have?
Look what zero has done to us in less than 8 years. It’s horrifying! If Hillary imports another million “refugees”, and they do their chain migration thing not to mention their high birth rate...before we know it we won’t recognize this country from the one we grew up in.
We’re at the tipping point now - seems to me - of being able to out vote the radicals.

As for Pence, he’s very popular in a key area of the country - the Midwest. Look for polls in that area to bump the Trump/Pence ticket up a couple of points - at least - in the next week. IMHO, the VP NEVER brings many votes in, but he (or she) can sure lose votes for the POTUS candidate. Pence won’t do the latter.
Something you didn’t mention is the effect on Republicans. Being so rock solid conservative, he will help to smooth over the ruffled feathers of the #NT people, and assuage the fears of many about the “bomb-throwing” Trump. Pence is nothing if not a cool, measured guy, and that will have a good effect on the campaign trail. FYI, I also believe that Trump was also in the process of ameliorating the “bomb throwing” aspect of his campaign, and becoming more “Presidential.” He is reportedly that way in private, and it won’t be that difficult to take away the ultra-combative shell of a personality that he’s displayed on the campaign trail.
This election is, IMHO, Trump’s to lose at this point - and he’s not only smart enough not to drop the ball, and to surround himself with very capable and experienced people that will help in this task, but his competitive nature will not allow him to lose. Clinton is also a piss poor candidate - even leaving her utter corruption (moral and legal) out of the equation (and they won’t be, quite obviously).
Start getting used to hearing “President Trump.” BTW, I don’t know how old you are, but my first Presidential vote was in 1980. It took about a year to get used to “President Reagan,” and it was fun the entire time (except when he got shot) - the Dems all needed duct tape to keep their heads from exploding, and it will be even more fun this time around.

He may also add a sense of "calm" in some folks minds as he contrasts with Trump's masculinity.
Evangelicals should also like Pence.
He may not broaden the base across the board, but he should broaden the conservative Republican base and make it easier for the "independently minded" folks to vote Trump.under the conditions of the day, I'm perfectly satisfied with Pence being on the ticket.

You’re correct - if we allow many more of the Moose Limbs in, we won’t recognize our country before long. It is already bad enough with the near-complete brainwashing of our youth by the Left - no one seems to be a patriot any more, there seems to be a reflexive instinct to BLAME this country for every ill in the world. Now I’m not some kind of blind idiot - I know that this nation is very far from perfect and has made a boatload of mistakes over time, but to paraphrase Winston Churchill: “America is the worst country in the world, except for all the rest.” We’ve saved the bacon of many dozens of nations over the years, at great cost in blood and treasure, and with no motivation of national gain (i.e. territory) - how does that make us the focus of evil in the world (except in the demented mind of a Leftist?).
