You know? When I was inducted in 1968, I had to make a pledge of loyalty to this country. IIRC it even used the word “God”....
When my wife got naturalized back in the 70s she had to pass an insane amount of “testing”. I had to provide an affidavit I wouldn’t let her become a ‘burden’.
