GOP platform gets Trump-ified
The Hill ^ | 13 Jul 2016 | Jonathan Easley

CLEVELAND — Donald Trump is putting his stamp on the official policy platform of the Republican Party.

Republican Platform Committee members on Tuesday voted to include language calling for the construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

And in a nod their presumptive presidential nominee’s support for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration, they also endorsed language that would impose “special scrutiny” of foreign nationals seeking to enter the U.S. from “regions associated with Islamic terrorism.”

Both provisions are departures from the GOP platform of 2012, when Republicans nominated Mitt Romney for president.

That party platform then called for completing “double-layered fencing” on the border, which was ordered by Congress in 2006 but never completed. It was silent on any special scrutiny of Muslims or other people from countries associated with Islamic extremism.

The language on a border wall is a significant shift away from the “autopsy” report written by the Republican National Committee after Romney’s defeat. That report emphasized the need for the party to appeal to Hispanic voters to win back the White House.

Platform Committee members described the endorsement of Trump’s immigration proposals as evidence the party is fully embracing him on the issues that have energized his supporters and infuriated his critics.

“Back on June 16 of 2015, Donald Trump proposed this, and it resonated with the people of America,” said Stephen Stepanek, a committee member and delegate from New Hampshire who endorsed Trump last month.

“So not only is the Platform Committee recognizing the position Donald Trump has held throughout the primary process, it has been endorsed by the American people, who have overwhelmingly supported his positions and overwhelmingly made him the presumptive nominee.”

Getting the wall built into the platform is a big win for the Trump campaign as it seeks normalize the proposals that some party leaders have been loath to embrace..............Trump keeps on moving ahead...

The Clinton dynasty stopped in its tracks, and the networks she would have perpetuated torn asunder. That alone is a sufficient result of a Trump Presidency.

platform already had border fence listed at least since 2006. Commentor on FOX yesterday said it just has never had funding approved. Commentor said so it was an easy switch to make it say WALL to satisfy Trump and his base.

Trump getting to change even one word of the platform is huge considering the opposition he has faced in the GOP this past year.

Now add....work towards eliminating abortion in addition to the anti-abortion stance.

The sound and fury about some sort of convention revolt is nonsense and has been for months. If there was serious trouble at the rules committee level, then there would be serious trouble at the platform committee level.

There isn’t.

If the rules committee were to unbind the delegates (which seems highly unlikely, suspect, illegal or all of the above), it would likely end up with Trump getting MORE delegates on the first ballot than LESS.

The GOP needs to come together to win and the only people who don’t understand that are the fringe 5% #NeverTrump people and the same amount of #NeverCruz people.

The other 90% of the party know they have to unite behind Trump to win.

Looks like Trump has crushed Ryan and McConnell, regarding the
GOP platform.

Watching things play out, I'm reminded of when a product or industry has become obsolete and how those whose livelihoods depend upon that product/industry fight their losing fight until they are ultimately left behind.

The GOPe's progressive brand is obsolete and they've been playing their base for years while hoping that no one notices.

In spite of their high opinions of themselves, they are clearly not too big to fail, but they are just big enough to piss off most of America!

Adios, güey. Hola, Señor Trump!

I just put a Trump bumper sticker on my car. I was complimenting a guy with a Trump Make America Great Again bumper sticker as he was getting into his car, so he gave me one. He had quite the supply!

Jeb really did give his word to support the party’s nominee. Trump also did, and he said he would provided he was not cheated out of the nomination. He hasn’t been yet.

Bush, on the other hand, wasn’t cheated out of anything. He was just beaten. I guess to silver-spooners that isn’t fair, but the rest of the world.....

As a republican I never liked the neocon wars of choice and occupation (OK with special forces strikes and supporting pro-American forces with Green Berets and weapons, cash - not direct war), never liked free trade which was never part of the GOP ideology (imported as part of the GOP being an arm of Wall Street), and was never OK with globalism (which means open borders and free flow of peoples and trade goods regardless of origins).

They must be noticing how folks answer their surveys - and like me tell the Party that they’ll get none of my money until they stop playing lip service to conservative principles and actually get full on the Trump wagon and start acting on what they say from time to time.

As they craft this platform, I have a message to the Powers-that-be...

DO NOT GO SOFT ON THE ISSUES OF LIFE (ABORTION, EUTHANASIA, EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS, HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE, AND CLONING).

I, and many others, will be hitting the Democrats HARD on these issues once the platforms are finalized and published. See my profile for previous efforts. Going big this year on the message. There is no reason an 80%+ Christian nation should be embracing the culture of death!
