(CNN)The four-star commander of the U.S. Central Command got an unexpected, up close and personal look Monday at the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy when a U.S. Navy warship he was on was approached by five armed Iranian craft in the Arabian Gulf.
Gen. Joseph Votel was on board the USS New Orleans on a southbound transit in the Strait of Hormuz when the Iranian ships came within about 500 yards of the U.S. ship, according to U.S. defense officials.
A U.S. defense official said there were two separate encounters with the Iranian boats. The first was with a Houdong class patrol boat and the second with four smaller Iranian vessels. There was at least one bridge-to-bridge communication between the Americans and Iranians, the official said.
The encounters were deemed safe by the U.S., one defense official said, noting that Iranians often shadow U.S. Navy ships in the Gulf.
But Votel warned that such incidents pose a risk.

The Obama admin, meanwhile, is making the the three monkeys -- see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. ....which of course only serves to encourage the evil.
He didn’t surrender immediately?
Once our military weapon defense contractors sell Iran what they need they won’t just be stopping 500 yards out, they’ll be firing (or nuking)
He didnt surrender immediately?
Obama was in the bathroom and couldn’t be contacted

The bathroom in Target by chance?
And that is the real shame here.
Under Obama, the US military has become a punchline of jokes.
Really? Are we still selling them spares for F-14s? Maybe state of the art weapons only you know about like chemtrail dispersion attachments for camels.
Truth be told, the US lost the strategic chess match with Iran in the Persian Gulf. The big blue water ships of the US Navy were very vulnerable in the narrow shallow Persian Gulf. The Iranian fortified the shores of the Gulf with state of the art Chinese made shore to ship missiles. Those missiles were developed by the Chinese to clear the Taiwan Strait of hostile naval elements in the event of war with the ROC. Those missiles also featured an American designed guidance system licensed to China by the Clinton administration. If shooting were to start those missiles fired en masse, accompanied by thousands of less sophisticated missiles to engage and overwhelm the ships Phalynx and other defense systems would have been devastating. The US Navy faced a debacle worse than Pearl Harbor in less than fifteen minutes. Senor officers no doubt knew that their ships and crews were very vulnerable. IMHO history will show that this reality was a large factor that contributed to Obama’s decision to disengage from the area, and acquiesce to Iran.
They were safe but posed a risk? They should have sank all five and then photographed the Iranians swimming away. Would be a good match for the photo of sailors surrendering earlier.
That’s what smart bombs are for, coastal clearance before the ships come in.
Was there no technology to transfer?
So little time left for the treasonous
al Qaeda-supporting Pentagon.
500 yds is 5 football fields. That’s not exactly a close encounter. Iranian patrol boats could be put on the bottom of the straits in about 2 minutes if the commander got a wild hare. :-)
What? We didn’t surrender immediately? Obama and Kerry must have been unavailable.
Nope, on the golf course.
Can’t air strikes take out those missiles?
Does the New Orleans have the combat laser mounted for action?
Out on the open water like that 500 yards doesn't look very far at all.
On a side note, I've always wondered why football fields look so big on TV. One hundred yards is pretty much a standard sighting in/load testing distance for most rifles. And it's just a short walk to the targets. d:^)
Run silent.
Run deep.
