Dems block Senate defense bill, fear domestic spending cuts

Senate Democrats sidetracked a $575 billion defense bill for next year late Thursday and threatened to shut down Congress’ work on spending legislation, accusing Republicans of shortchanging domestic programs. The move prompted the leaders of each party to testily accuse the other side of dysfunction.

Both parties support the defense measure itself. But Democrats fear that if it is completed and sent to President Barack Obama, they would lose leverage with the GOP for future spending measures financing health, public works, law enforcement and other domestic programs.

The Senate voted 50-44 to head off a Democratic filibuster of the bill but fell 10 short of the 60 votes needed, effectively stalling the measure. …

Deep civilian spending cuts are badly needed. The national debt is well over $19 trillion. Personal and local government debts are even more outrageous. Start by cutting federal spending to state and local governments.

These Democrats are acting like cowardly jihadis hiding behind women and chidren. Their case for domestic spending is so weak they have to take the Defense Bill hostage to get their way.

Are reporters trained to write stupid, or are they born that way? The Democrats successfully filibustered the bill. The Republicans fell ten votes short of cloture.

Fine. Just keep the Defense appropriations bill first to be voted on with no continuing resolution. When the Democrats filibuster put the spotlight on them for closing down the government.
