“Scoffing” is an east coast version of the word scarfing.
Scoffing is belittling and expressing skepticism and on either coast and in the middle. I can accept that it is a rendition of a Boston pronunciation of Scarfing but that should not change the spelling. If perverted pronunciation changes the spelling then anything written by Bostonians and other New Englanders would be unreadable in the rest of the country. I am a long time resident of an East Coast state and have never heard the R omitted in that word.
