Obama backtracks on UK trade warning to limit Brexit fallout

President Barack Obama is backtracking on his warning that Britain would go to the “back of the queue” for a U.S. trade deal, as he tries to contain the fallout of the U.K.’s decision to leave the European Union.

The shift in tone illustrates how Britain’s vote has abruptly scrambled Obama’s reality. Where the president had tried to encourage the U.K. not to rashly abandon the European bloc, he now must reassure Britain that its decision to do so won’t mean its demise. His priority of locking in trade deals before leaving office now becomes a distant second, behind the more urgent task of restoring confidence in the financial markets and in Europe’s future.

“The Obama administration — and a number of leaders in Europe as well — is trying to calm the waters. At this point, there are more questions than answers,” said Miriam Sapiro, Obama’s former acting trade representative and now an adviser at the strategy firm Finsbury. …

urgent task of restoring confidence in the financial markets and in Europe’s future.

Urgent? The markets have hardly rippled after the first couple days.

Wow.

Josh Lederman thinks the U.K. needs O'bama the Grifter to "reassure" Britain on whether or not it experience a post-Brexit decision demise.

Wonder if this buffoon wears Clown pants too.

He’s backtracking because it is just another example of him being wrong about everything he gets involved in because he was raised anti-America/Capitalism/Freedom. Notice how the stock market reacted after the first few days? That’s right, it went beyond it’s pre-Brexit levels. The sky didn’t fall, chicken little Obama.

Nothing Obama can say or due will significantly impact the markets from this point forward. Not sure where the author thinks Obama's omnipotence comes from. His urging of Britain to remain and stock recovery simply make him look foolish now.

He's done a lot previously to insult and adversely effect US - Great Britain relationships.

President Trump will put them at the front of the queue. I would also hope his first call is to the British Embassy in Washington and ask them to return the bust of Winston Churchill, that Obama had removed from the White House.

“Yet current and former Obama administration officials are operating under the assumption that Democrat Hillary Clinton, if elected, would come around to supporting Obama’s trade deals after finding ways to reconcile specific concerns she’s raised about jobs, wages and national security.”

LOL

To translate: Hillary is LYING THROUGH HER TEETH as she tries to fight off both Bernie and Trump, by trying to also sound populist.

” American officials have also discussed letting Britain simply join the U.S.-EU deal at a later date despite no longer being an EU member.”

MARK MY WORDS: The EU will NEVER permit that. For that would mean that the UK would get the benefits of being in the block, but would not have to suffer the humiliation of having Germany run their country.

“The Trump Effect”

I agree, it’s one thing to step on the UK when you’re running against McCain/Romney, as they probably HATE the UK as much as Obama.

But not so with Trump, and certainly not so with his supporters. Treat the UK bad, and Trump will BLAST HIM...and he knows that.

Hence “The Trump Effect”.
