This time of year, Andrew Gafford, who's almost 8, is visiting Boulder's Spruce Pool on a daily basis.
And though he's learning to live with the fact that the pool has banned the sale of Neapolitan ice cream sandwiches his longtime snack bar go-to he's still prone to spurts of heartache.
"I'll get over it, but then it brings back a lot of memories of me getting ice cream sandwiches," Andrew said. "Like this one time, when I was eating one very slowly, so it melted all over me. It makes me feel sad to say."
He'd start going to the Scott Carpenter Park Pool instead, if it'd make a difference. But it would not.
As of this summer, ice cream has been discontinued as a vending option for all Boulder Parks and Recreation facilities.
That's because the ice cream bars previously being sold have larger portion sizes and higher sugar and fat content than is allowed under the city's latest guidelines. Today's Boulder-sanctioned snacks must satisfy a series of nutritional standards, which govern not only ice cream and sandwich-based ice cream variants, but apply also to everything from nuts, chips, packaged fruits, cereal, cookies and pudding.

I was at the store today and wanted some Popsicles and all they had was the Sugar Free ones that I dislike so I went home with none and was a little bitter about it too.
Just leave me alone and let me eat or buy what I like.
Some mom will probably bring a cooler full and hand them out. Might get away with it a couple of times but the nanny storm troopers will figure out a way to stop it.
The Food Gestapo will probably substitute tofu for ice cream in the vending machines and then whine that taxpayers should fork over more money for the park because their revenues are down. Stupid.
They were on sale recently for $1 a box and I had my .50 cents off coupons all ready for them. All sugar free now, I was so mad. We can’t have those.. so I sent them an email. I have no idea when they made this awful decision because I’ve been buying them for as long as I can remember.
You should have come by our house - we have lots. Sometimes make them ourselves. Grandsons like the ones made with half orange sherbet and half vanilla ice cream, then dip in chocolate and roll in chopped nuts or carmel bits or just frozen OJ.
May have to get one out of the freezer myself!
"Wanna lick? PSYCHE!"
So: It's Sunday funnies & ice cream tomorrow!
lol
Damned ponytailed bastards.
Nanny State PING!
NEVER QUESTION AUTHORITY! THEY KNOW BEST.
They will arrest her for not having a vendors "permit"
