This time of year, Andrew Gafford, who's almost 8, is visiting Boulder's Spruce Pool on a daily basis.
And though he's learning to live with the fact that the pool has banned the sale of Neapolitan ice cream sandwiches his longtime snack bar go-to he's still prone to spurts of heartache.
"I'll get over it, but then it brings back a lot of memories of me getting ice cream sandwiches," Andrew said. "Like this one time, when I was eating one very slowly, so it melted all over me. It makes me feel sad to say."
He'd start going to the Scott Carpenter Park Pool instead, if it'd make a difference. But it would not.
As of this summer, ice cream has been discontinued as a vending option for all Boulder Parks and Recreation facilities.
That's because the ice cream bars previously being sold have larger portion sizes and higher sugar and fat content than is allowed under the city's latest guidelines. Today's Boulder-sanctioned snacks must satisfy a series of nutritional standards, which govern not only ice cream and sandwich-based ice cream variants, but apply also to everything from nuts, chips, packaged fruits, cereal, cookies and pudding.

I predict this won’t last more than two summers.
They’re children. They all scream for Ice Cream!
The homosexual lifestyle choice is one of the most unhealthy decisions anyone could ever make.
Will they be banning gays?
Let me just say fu inbred hick Alison Rhodes.
“I’ll get over it, but then it brings back a lot of memories of me getting ice cream sandwiches,” Andrew said.
Fond memories from “back in the day” for this 8 year old... back before the nanny state sucked the joy out of living.
No walking around kid is going to have fond memories of carrot sticks, cauliflower, or broccoli.
Raw carrots and celery for you children, or nothing!
Again, fu and your demented thought processes Alison Rhodes.
LOL, Spruce Pool is practically in my backyard, I should set up an ice cream stand.
And who will push back against this nonsense? When no one does, the junior despots just keep pushing their totalitarian agenda, inch by inch. Okay, ice cream may be more like a quarter-inch.
Exactly, delusional liberals.
The Leftist’s want to take ALL THE JOY out of being alive. Then you won’t mind exiting this earthly plane early, when you don’t get any health care from the Government.
Another reason to not go to Boulder when we go skiing in Colorado. Colorado needs to let them be their own state. Maybe all the nanny’s from Austin, Texas, can also join them.
Now I’m going to the store and get enough Blue Bell to get me through the holiday weekend.
WELL,...there goes the DQ Denis The Menis Special.
This is GREAT, Why don’t the fine citizens of Boulder get behind this. Actually they should fully SUPPORT this and Expand on it. How about this as a Start:
All Public Employees Shall be Terminated for using or possessing any Snack Item banned at Public Facilities.
:-)
Reminds me of when I was a kid back in the 1950s and the vending machine at the public pool with packages of M&Ms. The vending machine sat in the Sun all day and the packaged M&Ms were warm and on the verge of melting when you bought them. So good! To this day, I sometime microwave M&Ms for that special treat.
No, they must not be a state, then they would get 2 US Senators. Colorado should quarantine them, though. Build a wall !!
