Starbucks workers petition for more hours amid labor cuts

Nearly 9,000 Starbucks Corp workers and supporters have signed an online petition saying that the company has made "extreme labor cuts" at U.S. cafes, hurting employee morale as well as customer service.

Some employees said new technology that allows customers to order and pay from mobile devices is putting additional pressure on employees at some stores.

"Mobile orders have increased sales and created more need for labor, yet the company is cutting labor," wrote Makenna S., identified as a shift supervisor.

Like other restaurants and retail companies, Starbucks is wrestling with the effects of local minimum wage increases. Some petition commenters said Starbucks had not boosted pay for existing workers in areas where minimum wages have increased - creating a situation where new hires are paid about the same wage as more experienced peers.

Signers said take-home pay has taken a further hit because tipping has falling substantially amid broad customer adoption of the "Starbucks Rewards" program, which allows customers to pay with a loyalty card or mobile phones.

Starbucks' U.S.-dominated Americas region posted a 7 percent gain in the second quarter, down from 9 percent in the first quarter, and the current quarter rise is seen at 6.2 percent, according to Consensus Metrix.

Total aside from the whiners in the article, I’ve noticed more and more places going with the iPad payment device, which automatically calculates 10, 15, and 20% tips.

I think it’s a bad idea for the business and the workers. When most people tip, they estimate in their head, and add a touch if they’re not sure. Calculating the exact tip for the customer removes the doubt, and workers are far less likely to be overtipped.

That said, who tips a coffee slinger? It’s coffee!

It they are smart enough to pour a cup of their muddy coffee
they should be smart enough to connect the dots on the labor issue.

Ideas have consequences. Coffee at home is way cheaper and more convenient.

I doubt many leftist freaks can or will make the connection.
I see their response being something like, “See, this will only get worse if Trump is elected!”

My mom worked retail in an women’s clothing store when I was growing up and was on a straight commission basis. She always did well - lots of suggestive selling and was able to build a clientele of faithful shoppers, sometimes two and three generations of them. Most stores don’t even have clerks anymore.

As was predicted by those who understand math.

Yeah but while you and I learned about supply and demand, these idiots received trophies for showing up at soccer games and climbing out of mommy’s SUV.

I worked in a grocery store when I was 19. There were probably no fewer than 30 employees on the schedule on any shift (the large number of female cashiers around my age made it a great place to work! ;)

I was in that same store a few weeks ago. I think I counted a grand total of nine employees, including the manager.

I like it. I’m sure they called anyone who pointed out how $15/hr min wage or ObamaCare would impact their working conditions in this matter a idiot or what not. Nice to see it come back and bite them in the ass.

Starbucks is just a Taco Bell that sells better Coffee and second rate finger food. I don't tip at Taco Bell who's workers most likely make much less than the Snowflakes at Starbucks. They may get 50 cents from me, change from the transaction, only then because they are begging for it with a tip jar. Meantime isn't SB paying a nice chunk of college tuition for these whiners?

NO TIPS.They demonstrated & got their $15.00 minimum wage, so live on it. Tips are for exceptional service. Other than that, no way, Jose!

Interesting. I also remember that every grocery check-out used to have a sacker and you didn’t ever have to ask for carry out. Great job for high school guys to have. Recently saw lots of suppliers restocking their own products with employees only restocking the store brands. The store I frequent the most has no butcher after 8 p.m.

Medical health insurance for Kroger employees, at least here in Texas, seems to be month to month and coverage is dependent upon the number of hours they work in a given month.

Looks like Starbucks employees are complaining about decrease in tips. The only place our family tips are sit down restaurants.

Welcome to the world of socialism. This was such a predictable outcome of the vote to raise the minimum wage.
