Howard Baker, then a senator from Tennessee, captured the essence of the Watergate scandal that took down the presidency of Richard M. Nixon in these simple words: It is almost always the cover-up rather than the event that causes trouble.
Nixon resigned 42 years ago, but Bakers words have lived on in Washington, because the impulse to conceal a misdeed is shared by politicians of every persuasion, including Hillary Clinton, who is now running for the office Nixon vacated.
One irony has not been missed: In her first major job out of law school, Hillary Clinton joined the special committee, of which Baker was ranking minority member, investigating Nixon. And more irony: Bill Clinton, who turned that job down, would eventually become president and be impeached himself.
So universal among the powerful is this instinct to conceal a misdeed that there is a taxonomy of the process: the initial responses to an allegation, the withholding or tampering with evidence, the delayed response, the intimidation of whispers, and the damage control.
The current investigation into Hillary Clintons use of a private email server while secretary of state reminds us of a truism in these matters: Politicians never seem to learn. We can look at her current troubles through the lens of Watergate to understand what to expect with any politician stepping over the line:

SUBSECTION: WHITEWATER
Revised 1/8/01
WHITEWATER
President’s deposition concerning Arkansas McDougal related bank fraud was denial. Susan McDougal’s refusal to answer question “Did the president testify truthfully?” resulted in jail time. Bank documents found in trunk of abandoned car.
NewsMax 3/3/99 Inside Cover “ D’Amato hit Starr hard when questioned about his own committee’s attempts to learn if the late Vincent Foster had been tipped off about an impending FBI search of Judge David Hale’s office just hours before Foster was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head . D’Amato added, “There was an absolute total fear on the part of the Democrats that Judge Hale, if permitted to testify, would have rocked the country,” saying that Starr’s insistence on immunity for Hale only kept the truth from coming out. Just months after Foster’s 1993 death, Hale fingered President Clinton in Whitewater wrongdoing. Foster, while Deputy White House Counsel, had doubled as the Clintons’ Whitewater lawyer ”
Alamo Girl
But Hillary is a Democrat.
I believe the main thing to watch will be how other politicians do NOTHING about this. Most of them are guilty of something or other and would hate to see themselves held to a high standard.
I believe Hildabeast and all her cronies should be locked in solitary confinement until this is resolved. No chance of corroboration. Press them until one of them squeals!
They only have to string this out till Jan. 19.
PARDONMAGEDDON!
“One irony has not been missed: In her first major job out of law school, Hillary Clinton joined the special committee, of which Baker was ranking minority member, investigating Nixon.”
She was fired from that job for lying on official reports to the committee.
Her first major job ...
... which she lost for lack of ethics...
... no recommendation given...
... while still in the job she helped argue saying “I don’t recall” could constitute perjury...
... the last bit just helps put the irony over the top.
Patiently waiting for Comey to complete this investigation and release it. I’ve been angered to tears more times than I care to count over the last 8-10 years over the obvious...that THEY get away with what we would be charged with.
This is a subtle and deserved slam of congress. Congress isn't just a corrupt institution. When the designated lawmaking body of our republic rubber-stamps tyranny, it gives tyranny the patina of legitimacy.
The Hildebeast is the sum of every negative personal trait and character flaw that no republic can accept in a chief executive. Congress has had every opportunity to stomp on the evil that is Obama and his ministers.
Congressional coddling tyranny and treason are among the reasons I will sit out the congressional portion of the November election.
Comey is deeply compromised by obeying The Lyncher. The FBI have become a joke under his “leadership”.
Grows? It aint going no where!
Obama’s ineligibility, then 8 years of his lawless administration. Lerner and Koskinen. As we head into July, four years later, Hillary & Benghazi: “No evidence of wrongdoing”. The House. “Give us Congress, we’ll take it from there!” The GOP.
Yep, it’s all just sound and fury from uniparty for us plebs.
Go Trump, win win win. We’re counting on you.
Why do we even post these articles anymore. There seems to be ample proof that the lawless Mrs Clinton will not even be prosecuted much less found guilty. The nail in the coffin of possible prosecution was the private meeting between Bill Clinton and AG Lynch in Phoenix.
So we do just throw the towel in and give up?
I remember her site
I have no faith whatever in our government. There is NO controlling legal authority....hasn't been for decades.
NO, WE ELECT DONALD TRUMP!
Another post on FR from today says Bill Clinton meet privately with Loretta Lynch. That has to be illegal. Any thoughts?
Schlonging of some sort...
I agree.
