Pictures of a scale model and computer renderings of a new guided-missile destroyer project for the Republic of China (Taiwan) Navy (ROC Navy) emerged last week in the 中国军事中國軍事武器 (China Military Chinese Weapon) magazine. This new destroyer project is in line with Taiwan's new naval acquisition plan which was unveiled late last year. The new plan called for four new destroyers (among other vessels).

Based on the picture and images, one of the key feature of the new destroyer class is a large mast with four AESA radar arrays presumably for air and missile defense systems.

The destroyer is fitted with no less than 16x anti-ship missiles (likely the new Hsiung Feng III missiles) and three zones of VLS cells: One forward and two in the middile of the hull (located in between the anti-ship missile launchers). The exact number of cells not clear but it could 3x16, if not more.

A Phalanx CIWS is located on top of the helicopter hangar. On the scale model (which design doesn't exactly match the design of the image), a Taiwanese Sea Oryx RAM-like weapon system is fitted in addition to the Phalanx.

Displacement of the ship will be in the 6,000 to 8,000 tons range (slightly lighter compared to the 10,000 destroyers outlined in the naval acquisition plan last year). The first tranche of funding (US $ 600 million) is expected for next year. According to the documents, the lead ship is supposed to be delivered in 2019. This will likely be difficult to achieve however as this is a new and complex design for Taiwan's shipbuilding industry.

Taiwanese shipbuilding industry latest developments include the Tuo River-class catamaran corvette, an air-defense variant of this catamaran corvette and fast combat support ship Panshih.

The Taiwanese make all sorts of other high tech stuff. I don’t see why they can’t build these
