"The African migrant who voted to leave was as fearful of the new arrivals, of his or her chances in a crowded job and housing market, as was his indigenous British neighbour"

It’s interesting to note that “people of colour” always try to escape from each other and try to be close to the “white devil.”

Gotta hand it to these people, they are making much more sense than the ruling class.

“I’m here ... now that’s enough Africans!” It’s quite a reasonable calculation of advantages, and appears in a great variety of forms and situations.

What are you talking about? The Nigerians etc. come from ex-British colonies and moved to the UK as a good place for jobs.

Err.. you do realize that the immigration debate in the UK for the referendum was due to EUROPEAN immigrants to the UK from the EU? The UK had to cut non-EU immigrants to try and limit the overall number of immigrants (As EU immigrants don’t need any permission and can walk in)? It’s got nothing to do with “now that’s enough Africans”

Okay, so phrase the anti-competition reasoning slightly differently. It’s a perfectly reasonable position to hold.

The referendum debate could not escape the thorny issue of immigration, and the African migrant who voted to leave was as fearful of the new arrivals, of his or her chances in a crowded job and housing market, as was his indigenous British neighbour.

Senior politicians said during the debates that their constituents in London were bemoaning the lack of places for their children in local schools because of the burgeoning numbers coming from Eastern Europe, and such complaints were, in the case of Streatham in south London, coming from the African-Caribbean community.

Okay. I already agreed that I had misunderstood. The argument is still “too many” in competition for jobs and other resources: I had simply made an error about the nationality of the competition.

It’s the same reason why Trump is going to peel off some black and Hispanic votes from the Dems.

well, more about the ethnicity.

It's the same everywhere. The English resented the Irish and sCots when they came to the UK. The Irish resented the Italians. They both resented the eastern europeans etc. etc.

I also think that controlled immigration can work well in terms of integration — if you take a few people and introduce them, and they assimilate, then there is not that much resentment among the majority. But large numbers can cause resentment

I agree with both your posts: that the phenomenon operates regardless of the ethnicities in competition, and that it can be reduced by deliberation regarding immigration *and* I would add, by limited government and by efficiency.

Competition in a free (or free-ish) labor market is one thing. Competition for government “benefits” is another: anything “given” by government to one group must first be confiscated, by the threat of force, from others.

I think that is possible, even likely. An impediment would be an unclear or self-contradictory message.

At this point Afro-Caribbean culture has well integrated into English urban culture and has been for many generations.

Afro-Caribbean yes (UB40, reggae, Ska!) , but the article was about :

Trust me -- I've lived in the UK and in Poland and the cultures are different, surprisingly so -- quite a lot of England seemed culture-less to me.

Very, very true.

Have seen that in the new neighborhood I live in. Three different families, two Hispanic, one Moroccan live in my building. The Hispanics moved from a neighborhood where 80% of the population was also Hispanic. They could not wait to get out of there.

The Moroccan family took the advice from others from their fellow countrymen and “ looked for a neighborhood which has Irish and Italian people “. My Moroccan neighbor’s words.

The curious thing is the native born Black American who said he moved from his Boston neighborhood to get away from “ dangerous elements “ and the hood in general. Yet his behavior is appalling and downright ignorant. He wanted to get away from the hood, live in a neighborhood with 98% “ white people “ and yet brings hood behavior with him. The man works and has a very good job. But he’s a hood rat.

Same thing there as here. BTW, if you listen to any black people raised in England on tv, they simply sound like English speakers. No ebonics, no gang signs while speaking...
