To be fair and balanced, can we point out that four years ago, a number of leading Democrats skipped Obama’s convention? They make it sound as if this is fatal to Trump’s chances in the election.
Not every politician in a political party attends every single convention . just pointing out.

Did they compete with Obama for the nomination?
Not exactly the same.
How many of them signed a PLEDGE to support the nominee and then refused to do so ?
Besides, four years ago, Obama was the incumbent, so it is hardly a parallel case.
There is just no way to spin what these candidates are doing as meeting their pledge to “support the eventual nominee of the party”. Every single one of those 16 opponents should have sucked it up, pulled a few of Trump’s policy points they can in good conscience support, and be vocal supporters of Trump citing those points and demurring from any other questions. Certainly they should never utter a single negative word.
