~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho

Mountain Home Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located in southwestern Idaho, United States. The base is in Elmore County, 12 mi (19 km) southwest of the city of Mountain Home, which is 40 mi (64 km) southeast of Boise, via Interstate 84.

The host unit at Mountain Home since 1972 has been the 366th Fighter Wing (366 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC), nicknamed the "Gunfighters." The base's primary mission is to provide combat airpower and combat support capabilities to respond to and sustain worldwide contingency operations.

Mountain Home AFB is the home of the 366th Fighter Wing (366 FW), which reports to Air Combat Command (ACC). The mission of the 366 FW is to prepare Airmen and their families, professionally and personally, for expeditionary operations and foster an environment that promotes integration of all facets of wing operations.

In addition, the 726th Air Control Squadron gives an air picture to the aircraft as they train. An active Idaho Air National Guard unit, the 266th Range Squadron, controls and maintains emitter sites within the 7,412 sq miles operational training range located in southern Idaho.

Air Combat Command is the primary force provider of combat airpower to America's warfighting commands. To support the global implementation of national security strategy, ACC operates fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, battle-management, and electronic-combat aircraft.

It also provides command, control, communications and intelligence systems, and conducts global information operations.

The size and location of the Mountain Home range complex, currently undergoing expansion, has allowed the base to support the training of airmen in numerous weapons systems over the years.

The community contended that after a recently completed $3 million renovation, Mountain Home has one of the largest ramps in Air Combat Command and is designed to support both bomber and tanker aircraft.

As many as 220 aircraft can be parked on the ramp. In addition, the base has built 600 of 1,400 new housing units planned in a ten-year program.

I like to get the telescope out to look at the moon too.
It must have been exhilarating for the astronauts to walk on its surface.

We’ve lived through some fascinating times regarding space .... man walking on the moon, seeing all the planets with the different probes that have been sent out, etc. I’m still gaga over the pix of Pluto. What an interesting place that turned out to be.

The Strawberry Moon is living up to its name tonight. It rose over TN a nice reddish color, which you can see in post 38.

it’s not quite over the trees in the neighbors back yard, but I look forward to seeing it. The last few months, it’s been cloudy on this, my favorite view of the moon!

I had a great day! I was off and just did what I felt like doing. LOL!

Hope you, hubby and kittehs had a good day, too!

There were a lot of puffy clouds here today and I was worried the view might be blocked this evening. But the sky’s clear as a bell, or at least it was when I went out to snap pix.

We miss out on a lot of cool events due to clouds and it’s frustrating.

A day off to do what you feel like doing sounds like a pretty good day! LOL

A quiet day here. Was going to do a little grocery shopping but it was hot and I decided to wait until tonight when it’s cool.

When I bought the camera I used, I knew it had a good zoom on it but had no idea I’d be able to get such good pix of the moon. I bought it to get some decent shots of critters around the farm, especially does and their fawns. We had a doe with twins last year that I couldn’t get good shots of and this year, haven’t seen the first deer. Figures! LOL

It sure takes good ones. I have an awesome new telescope that I need to take out and go see the moon close up. It’s very heavy so I need help with it. Plus lots of mosquito repellent. LOL!

I always thought it would cost a ton o’ cash to get a camera that would take pix like this one does. I bought a $300 Nikon that was on sale for $200 and have been thrilled with it.

Does your telescope have a computerized base that makes it so heavy? Hubby bought one for me several years ago that I’ve used only 3 or 4 times. It weighs 100 lbs. and there’s no way I can move it. Dad sent one he hadn’t used for years and it’s much lighter. No computer. That’s the one I use when I want to enjoy the heavenly bodies, though it isn’t as good as the heavy one. Better than nothing though.

First full moon falling on the solstice since 1948 they say.
And it sure was a beauty as it rose!

Sky watching is relaxing and can be fascinating. I lived in cities for years and couldn’t see much then. But being in the country now, it’s a pleasure to get outside and see many neat things ........... provided there aren’t any clouds. LOL
