I think you nailed it. Trump is a very good judge of character which includes loyalty and the desire to be productive. If they were constantly at each others throats, someone had to leave.
It would not surprise me that Trump sat down with each man, individually, and requested a 5 minute assessment of their efforts and where the problem might be.
He made a considered decision and found Lewandowski to be redundant. I’d hope Lewandowski doesn’t lash back.

Do we know if Lewandowski is still with Trump in some capacity? I’d be surprised if Trump didn’t offer him something, loyalty to his people seems to be part of his nature.
Lewandowski was surely overmatched by the what a major national campaign requires at this stage. Manafort has been through this before and Trump is a Best Practices guy who succeeds by finding the best talent that he can.
