15,000 tons!

Isn’t that a lot for a destroyer?

Yeah. These Zoomie destroyers are more like cruisers. But everything is getting bigger, so a giant destroyer that’s packed with all sorts of goodies is OK with me!

(I can’t believe I just said a nice thing about a surface ship. I must be getting old.)

That was USS Zumwalt. The CO for this one may not have been selected yet.

The “destroyers” are suppose to be able replace frigates, and to some extent, even cruisers.

Thank you for the pictures. We have lost many good men, and I don’t remember how they looked, but Michael Monsoor’s visage is on my mind and my heart all the time. I also remember how his casket looked covered with all those tridents.

Gone too soon, never forgotten.

“Isn’t that a lot for a destroyer?”

When did we start complaining about more ammo to kill our enemies?

As President George W. Bush said of the event during the April 2008 Medal of Honor ceremony, “The procession went on nearly half an hour, and when it was all over, the simple wooden coffin had become a gold-plated memorial to a hero who will never be forgotten.”

Better to be named for an MOH awardee than the usual faithless politician.

It is. Historically speaking, post WWII/Korea destroyers were 4000 - 9000 tons displacement (the Tin Can sailors can, will, and should correct me if I am wrong)

These Zumwalt class “destroyers” are about the same displacement as a Baltimore class medium cruiser (some call it heavy, but I don’t think it was) from WWII.

These are the biggest destroyers ever, and I am surprised they were designated as such.
