BATH, Maine (AP) The mother of a fallen Navy SEAL christened the second Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer Saturday in honor of her son, who died in Iraq when he threw himself on an insurgent's grenade to save the lives of two fellow SEALS.
The 610-foot, 15,000-ton ship, built by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works for the U.S. Navy, was named for Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Monsoor. The 25-year-old California native died in 2006 and was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
"May God bless this ship, and all who sail within her," said Sally Monsoor before smashing a bottle against the ship as some 2,000 people looked on.
Monsoor described her son as a quiet, loyal person and recalled how he once made a Christmas tree out of a sapling in their family's yard.
The Zumwalt is the Navy's largest and most technologically sophisticated class of destroyer. It is the first new class of warship built at Bath Iron Works in more than 25 years. The Navy took ownership of the first stealth destroyer last month, and work is underway on the third and final ship.

and Capt. KIRK will be the Commander
15,000 tons!
Isn’t that a lot for a destroyer?
>>Isnt that a lot for a destroyer?
Yeah. These Zoomie destroyers are more like cruisers. But everything is getting bigger, so a giant destroyer that’s packed with all sorts of goodies is OK with me!
(I can’t believe I just said a nice thing about a surface ship. I must be getting old.)
Bump
I think so, Navy guys help us out.
Thanks, Bryanw92.
That was USS Zumwalt. The CO for this one may not have been selected yet.
The “destroyers” are suppose to be able replace frigates, and to some extent, even cruisers.
Thank you for the pictures. We have lost many good men, and I don’t remember how they looked, but Michael Monsoor’s visage is on my mind and my heart all the time. I also remember how his casket looked covered with all those tridents.
Gone too soon, never forgotten.

“Isnt that a lot for a destroyer?”
When did we start complaining about more ammo to kill our enemies?
As President George W. Bush said of the event during the April 2008 Medal of Honor ceremony, “The procession went on nearly half an hour, and when it was all over, the simple wooden coffin had become a gold-plated memorial to a hero who will never be forgotten.”
BUMP!
Amen, thanks for the post!
Better to be named for an MOH awardee than the usual faithless politician.
It is. Historically speaking, post WWII/Korea destroyers were 4000 - 9000 tons displacement (the Tin Can sailors can, will, and should correct me if I am wrong)
These Zumwalt class “destroyers” are about the same displacement as a Baltimore class medium cruiser (some call it heavy, but I don’t think it was) from WWII.
These are the biggest destroyers ever, and I am surprised they were designated as such.
They need a big platform for the rail gun
