Better to be named for an MOH awardee than the usual faithless politician.
Agreed 100%.
As a traditionalist, I have been appalled at the conventions the Navy has been using to name ships since WWII (for the most part)
A good example (Like this one) is the USS Michael Murphy, which I have kind of (to me) a funny story about.
I got to go on a tour of the Bath Ironworks when the USS Michael Murphy was nearly finished, but not yet commissioned. They had her in the water, tied to the pier.
They only do bus tours now, but...still pretty interesting. As the bus came around a building, we saw the USS Murphy, but we were still a good ways away. My eyes were immediately drawn to two camo-clad guards (in that stupid blue camo) armed with M-16s standing just forward of the forward gun mount.
They were facing each other, and I am sure that I was the only one who noticed this, playing “rock-paper-scissors”! I began laughing, and nudged my wife to look, just as a Chief strode purposely out to the two guards, and pretty obviously chewed them out. The two young guys stopped immediately and adopted very businesslike mannerisms...:)
