I walked the pooch by the high school Thursday, and the US flag is at half-staff.

The school may have had it at half-staff since Memorial Day. I see that a lot - usually banks and such places that fly the flag, but aren’t terribly diligent about it.

The United States Flag: Federal Law Relating to Display and Associated Questions Updated April 14, 2008 Presidents also have ordered the flag to be flown at half-staff on the death of leading citizens, not covered by law, as a mark of official tribute to their service to the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr. is among those who have been so honored.
Again, the provisions of the Flag Code on flying the flag at half-staff are, like all the Code’s provisions, a guide only. They do not apply, as a matter of law, to the display of the flag at half-staff by privat e individuals and organizations. No federal restrictions or court decisions are known th at limit such an individual’s lowering his own flag or that make such disp lay alone a form of desecration.

What service did they do? None that I can tell. And they were not leading citizens.

A proclamation has to be written. A verbal order isn't sufficient.

Soetero said the same damned speech after Ft Hood, Boston, Tennessee, Oregon,San Bernardino, this, and it seems like there have been more. Don’t all his peeches after “these tragedies...” sound almost the same word for word? I found myself listening today and thought is was a tape recorder.

This half staff flag honor is done so often it has lost all meaning. I don’t think twice when I see a half staff flag as I doubt I would even know who was being honored nor really care. It’s about time this practice be ended or reserved only for significant national figures. With Obama it might be more appropriate to fly the flag upside down
