If you've noticed Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has been a less-than-enthusiastic supporter of Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting Donald Trump, you're not alone.
And according to a new report Friday, one GOP insider is now explaining why. The unnamed "longtime Republican financial backer"who attended a New York fundraiser held by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for Trump Thursdaytold TheDailyCaller that most Republican donors are on board with Trump, yet Ryan is hoping Trump loses so he can run himself in four years.
The source tells TheDC that the reason Ryan has not been coming out strongly for Trump is because of his desire to run in four years. Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who has been fervently anti-Trump, also wants to run in four years, according to the longtime Republican backer. Romney will be 73 in 2020.
An aide for Ryan told TheDC, "Speaker Ryan said in an op-ed in the Janesville Gazette last week that he is voting for Donald Trump and of course he wants the Republican nominee to win in November."
It has been widely speculated for months that Ryan may have been using his position in Congress to position himself for a 2020 run. The 2012 GOP vice presidential candidate was considered one of the early favorites for 2016 until he announced he wouldn't seek the party's presidential nomination.
He now faces a stiff primary challengeunprecedented for a sitting speakerin Wisconsin's First Congressional District.

And Lodge I believe did run in ‘64.
Yup. This asshole’s judgement is as bad as Cruz. These two disloyal, unprincipled, unethical, lying, pro-NAFTA, pro-TPP, pro-amnesty pukes should be running as democrats. They hate America.
Ryan has as much chance of getting the Republican nomination as Jeb Bush. Unfortunately for the RINO’s, the Republican base is now looking at performance and leadership. What has Ryan accomplished other than fully funding every program Obama wanted? Has he demonstrated any real opposition leadership? He was elected to a position of leadership but in that position has only demonstrated an ability to take direction from the donor base and party insiders while capitulating to the Democrats.
No doubt his buddy Romney, the Bush family, the other insiders, and the big donors are telling him he can be the man in 2020 if he plays their game by ultimately retracting his faux tepid “endorsement” of Trump. If Ryan has any instincts at all he knows if he walks away from Trump the GOP base won’t nominate him in 2020. However, if he doesn’t publicly and dramatically betray Trump when ordered to do so, the fat cat donors won’t fund his campaign in 2020.
Ryan is caught between the proverbial rock and the hard place. Does he fully endorse the people’s choice with no qualifications or does he stab Trump publicly? Right now he is uncomfortably sitting on the fence. Clearly he does not understand that real leaders don’t sit on the fence. Real leaders do the right thing. Time to choose.
your toast?
I thought Ryan was either primaried, or soon to be primaried. Mr. Ryan, please, you’ve had your 15 minutes of fame when you lost with Romney. You rolled over for Barry’s budget. You failed to stop ObamaCare as promised. Go home.
Done...over...kaput
RINO wants to run? LOL On what principles? On what accomplishments? He’s a loser.
He’s being primaried now, by Paul Nehlen. The primary is August 9th.
Lamppost+ Rope+ Ryan
Wants to run for what?
“Wants to run for what?”
President of Mexico. He will be challenging Jeb Bush.
Ryan is very popular in his district and will easily win his primary.
Remember, it wasn’t his district who named him as his VP or who voted him in as speaker.
I heard this too. He wants to run for dog catcher in Mexico City.
Not a chance Ryan, you puke...
Lots of luck Ryan! am sure you will be as successful as Lindsey Graham and uncle Jeb!
Lodge won the ‘64 presidential Primary in New Hampshire as a write in. He came home from Vietnam but never ran as I recall. He had noting to do with his the write in vote and it was a big shock to him as well as everyone else.
The only chance he has of getting the nomination is to run as a Democrat.
He will never get my vote under ANY circumstances.
He will never get my vote either!!
Truly out of touch with reality.
