First time the cops do this and it screws up somebody’s credit rating because they miss a payment due to this type of seizure...cops will lose their asses. This is a stupid and shortsighted move on OK’s part.

“My reaction to this article is, the gov’t really has no right to be seizing people’s property at all,”

I agree with you 100%.

I’m 83 years old and the country is unrecognizable to me and nothing like the one in which I grew up.

And if your bank account is getting debited by collections you can’t control, getting paid on a prepaid card that you then spend for groceries, gas and utilities lets you still pay bills without having this month’s paycheck wiped out for last year’s back child support or that creditor you accidentally gave unlimited access to your checking account.

You have much misplaced faith in police departments or the state punishing law enforcement mistakes or misdeeds.
Police officers get away with murder literally all the time.

A citizen’s credit score or banking inconvenience means Nothing to the justice system since all lawsuit judgements against LEOs are ultimately paid for by the taxpayer.

You referenced funds that were linked to cards. I never disputed that,

That article referred to seizing bank accounts, with no mention of cards.

It WAS misleading.

I’m in my 60’s, and it is unrecognizable to me as well. Often I wonder about what my father would be saying, seeing the destruction of our Republic, if he were still alive. It makes me so sad to think of all who went before us, sacrificing their lives, limbs, etc. in the cause of real liberty. Why would anyone willingly serve our present tyrannical leaders? I really don’t know.

Remember when the police were your friendly neighborhood peace officer? Remember when they were “public SERVANTS”?

They have morphed into LAW ENFORCEMENT, with their tanks and SWAT teams trained on the citizenry. Instead of being our servants, they have become our MASTERS.

What was that famous Thomas Jefferson quote?

“When the Government fears the People, we have LIBERTY.
When the People fear the Governmennt, we have TYRANNY.

Ah, the Justice system...I remember that! Sadly, it’s really no longer about Justice. It’s more accurately termed the “Legal” system, as they enforce their unconstitutional laws against the People.

Doesn’t it work that way for work related Government Employees?

Bring someone up on ‘harassment charges’ and WE all end up paying for his defense?

This is something we should be doing to the family members of terrorists.

> But it cannot clean out a bank account.

And the thing stopping it is...? Principle? Some sort of red line we should assume will not be casually crossed with little to no fanfare? The tireless oversight and vigilance of legislators?

Thanks for the sanity check - we have too many that knee-jerk w/o ever having read a paragraph of the article or doing any fact checking.

Right now, the thing stopping it is that it doesn’t do it. The article headline says that it does. That is a lie. I’m not talking about “what can be”. I’m talking about idiot bloggers who make up misleading headlines. That is all.

Its amazing how FReepers will accuse me of being a closet fascist just because I question the validity of a headline. It’s like a bunch of damn liberals playing the race card.

“Somethings going on” is not a reason to snatch someone else’s money. Hiding something is not a good enough reason to take it. Our privacy laws and laws against unreasonable able search and seizure are designed to help us hide things. These rights protect us from tyrannical people who thinks it ok to just seize anything if there is possible lawbreaking.

Our government has now deemed illegal many things that should unhindered by governemt.

It could be the only reason it doesn’t do it now is because it isn’t configured to be... yet. This is an expansion on already-questionable government actions that have reached such a fever pitch that “forfeiture” now claims more of American’s wealth than all forms of non-government burglary, thievery, and robbery; and as such, questions about where this ends up are right and proper.
