The family apparently knew the victim for 10 years, so she was no stranger to him. Alcohol played a big part in this whole thing, for both the victim and this guy. While not condoning his actions, I do feel for his stupidity.

Also, her family was with her in California, his family is in Ohio where he grew up.

That “10 years” came from a letter by a Stanford Law prof. to the judge. It is the law prof. who knew the victim’s family for 10 years. So far as I have seen there is no indication that the victim and the perp knew each other before their encounter.
