That's exactly the way Gordie is being remembered today on WTIC 1080 radio here in the Hartford, CT area. One of the dirtiest players, yet a good guy and wonderful citizen off the ice.
He was one of the greats... RIP, Gordie.

I remember when I was a kid watching Gordie Howe at a Rangers game against the Red Wings at the old Madison Sq Garden.

Gordie was a far, far better man than the Mohammedan boxer, Ali.

Everybody under the age of 50 is going "Gordie who?"
I'm old enough to actually have seen Gordie play. Amazingly he played until 1980 when he was 52 years old.

I was too young to have seen him during his Red Wing days, and the WHA never got any coverage in Pittsburgh. But I knew the legend and was eager to see him in person.
I was surprised by how very chippy his play was. I suppose that’s how you survive as a 52 year old playing on a bad expansion team. (52 seemed REAL OLD to me at the time....not so now that I’ve gotten there!)
But he was a true gentleman and a great ambassador of the game. His wife was from just up the road from where I lived in Michigan.

#26 Go to the Star & Tribune paper and you will see Prince stories most days along with articles on bike paths and light trains and we need another new stadium. Scroll to bottom of page for more Prince news http://www.startribune.com/

Howe was to hockey what Muhammad Ali was to boxing. Let's see which one gets more attention now. They might be having a beer (or Tim Horton's coffee) and reminiscing right now.

Really cool find. When? What was the occasion?
I recognize Ali and Howe, of course. But who are the guys standing to their left?

Greatest hockey player of all time. This guy was a big star before my parents were born, and was still playing well in the NHL/WHA during my own lifetime. I don't think we'll ever see that type of longevity again. Retiring at 52?
Chris Chelios came closest at 48. Jaromir Jagr is 44.

I will watch Sunday’s game and go from there. If it goes to a game 7, it will be a new record for the NHL.

Gordie was never known for being terribly controversial or disturbing He would be in today's game with Gary Bettman.

I’ll go look for the link. One of them is Jim Brown.

Jim Brown looked very familiar. I had to look up Rod Laver. Thanks!

RIP. I am tearing up. Never saw him play but I used to read hockey bios as bedtime stories to my hockey son.
Right time of the year to die, for a hockey legend. Right in the middle of the Stanley Cup finals. That’s when I’d want to go. Plus at some point the cup will be hoisted with a toast to Gordie, no matter who wins it.
