R.I.P.
long time hockey fan here from back in the early 70’s when I loved the NY Rangers and my hero was Eddie Giacomin...saw Howe play a lot- RIP..
should also add Gordie has not been doing well at all in recent years...terrible decline in health
I remember when the Hartford Whalers joined the NHL in 1980. I bought rinkside tickets at the old Pittsburgh Civic Arena the first time they came to town. Just so I could tell my grandchildren that I had seen Gordie Howe play in person.
He was 52 years old, and without a doubt the dirtiest player I had ever seen in person. Knee to the groin, spear to the gut, etc.
Nonetheless a solid citizen in all other respects. He will be missed. RIP, Gordie.
Watch for the calls to rename the new Red Wings Stadium Howe something-or-other...
RIP #9
[Personal note: the 9 in my moniker was not intended to be in reference to Mr. Hockey, it’s my birth month, and an attempt at the time of it’s creation, to not select a currently playing-player. I’m a dork for forgetting]
The good thing about ali dying is we don’t hear about prince anymore.
I’d rather watch hockey than baseball.
Amen to all the above. I grew up playing football, but wish hockey had been an option.
Good memories of my father taking me to the Hartford Civic Center to see the Whalers play. Gordie was just the best.
Just for you...
Howe’s funeral won’t be a huge media affair like Ali’s. Wanna bet?
Did you just photoshop that!
;)
Well that’s a s#itty end to the week right there.
About Ali’s funeral....I thought Islam had some dictate that the body had to be buried within 24 hours?
Those were the days, nose bleed seats for $6 or $7 bucks!!!
One of the all time greats in that game.
Yes, he was Ali’s equivalent, at least in Michigan and Ontario, Canada. I’m sure there will be a lot of stories and memories told. Howe had somewhat recovered from the depths of Alzheimers by using stem cell therapy. At least his last two years were a little better than the ten before it.
Gordie was never known for being terribly controversial or disturbing, so those who only admire ‘anti’ heroes won’t be paying close attention.
But Gordie Howe can't be 88! He was playing when I was a kid! How's that possible?
RIP
I know, right? Did’nt they tell us that’s why the government was forced to tip Osama Bin Laden’s “dead body” into the Black Sea?
Mr. Hockey, both Detroit and Hartford will NEVER forget you!
Gordie Howe, RIP.
