"A century after transforming global trade and markets, the Panama Canal is about to revamp world trade once again.
On June 26 the canal is scheduled to reopen after a massive project costing more than $5 billion that will allow bigger ships to pass through the 102-year-old waterway, doubling cargo capacity.
U.S.-based businesses are recognizing the new growth opportunities. Many logistics experts predict the expansion of the so-called Panamex may shift international trade routes, allowing ships to reach Asia from the U.S. Gulf Coast more than two weeks faster than going east through the Suez Canal."

As I see it, the people living there were Colombians and then became Panamanians after.
SkyDancer, the colors on the map in that area of the world have been running for quite a few hundreds of years - typically, against the wishes of those who were conquered.
You could equally argue that it has moved back to it's original territory, though now populated with every race imaginable, including Indians from India, Chinese and Blacks that were brought in to build the canal. Also caucasians from everywhere. You can now look like anything and fit right into Panama.
The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá.[13] Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 the "Gran Colombia" Federation was dissolved. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.[14] Panama seceded in 1903.From Wiki
I can see it now The Grand Trump Canal with Casino and resort and golf course
There was not one word in this article that mentioned "CHINESE".......or maybe I missed it.
Both canals are owned by Panama.
We should build a new canal instead of a wall.
Owned by Panama, operated by China.
The major concern here is the fact that the Chinese have now taken over and acquired the ability to militarize the zone as the US once did...........
controlled by China.......
I thought that's what I said......thank you for correcting me
China operates a port at each end of the canal. It does not control the canal.
The USA is under treaty obligation to protect the canal - and it is in their best interests.
I think the US military could easily take over both ports, if it were a problem.
From November 1999 Phyllis Schlafly Report:
Jimmy Carter never would have been able to ram through his two treaties giving away our Panama Canal if the Senate in 1978 could have looked into the future and known that, when the U.S. Flag is lowered on December 31, 1999, Red China would become its gatekeeper. But that’s what’s scheduled to happen unless Congress takes immediate action to prevent it.
Don’t expect the Clinton Administration to interfere with China’s stunning beachhead in the Western Hemisphere. Clinton is hopelessly indebted to the Chinese and their allies in Indonesia for financing his presidential elections in 1992 and 1996.

“Currently the Panama Ports Company, a subsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd., has exclusive and extensive rights to control both ends of the Panama Canal. Hutchison Whampoa is a Chinese company owned by Hong Kong billionaire, Li Ka-Shing, who has strong ties with Beijing”

Okay, thanks. But anyway, Carter gave away what really didn’t belong to him, that it was the US that put that canal in, right?
The entire infrastructure of Panama City, which includes the office buildings and apartment buildings of Panama City has been developed with Chinese monies........
To say that they do not control the canal is kind of a misnomer......
And this makes the chances of a Chinese-funded canal in Nicaragua even more slim. There is no way it could compete with Panama.
Are you inferring that our government is not corrupt?
That is a tough one to answer.
There was a time when the answer would have been clear...
There's really only one "canal", but there are (soon) three sets of locks on each end. Most of it is lakes.
