Congress backs bill to put chemicals under federal scrutiny

Toxic chemicals used in everyday products such as household cleaners, clothing and furniture have been linked to serious illnesses, including cancer, infertility, diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Under current law, only a small fraction of chemicals used in these products have been reviewed for safety.

A bill that Congress sent President Barack Obama on Tuesday would set new safety standards for asbestos and other dangerous chemicals, including formaldehyde, styrene and BPA, that have gone unregulated for decades. The bill would update the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act to require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to evaluate new and existing chemicals against a new risk-based safety standard that includes considerations for vulnerable people such as children and pregnant women.

The EPA and advocacy groups have identified a number of chemicals as potentially harmful. The proposed law would give EPA authority to evaluate whether they should remain on the market.

I work for a company that manufactures chemical products. We have a whole department that does nothing but keep track of regulations. They want to do more? Inconceivable.

Its the same in the food industry. Every production process is micro-managed and traced and documented, while most E.coli breakouts come from farm workers crapping in the same fields in which they are picking vegetables in Mexico

I would support a bill to put federal agencies and employees under review by citizens for toxicity to US Society. They work for us by the way. And we are certainly not their slaves like they think we are. How to eliminate their toxicity? That is open to discussion, but EPA approved incinerators may be an option. The small minority of government can attack bakers that don't want to bake a gay wedding cake. The majority of citizens who oppose this attack on Christians should have an even greater right to destroy the future of these leftist activists and politicians.

And can we please put anyone who opposes the 2nd amendment under the jail forever?

They don’t believe they work for us. They believe they work only for the US president. Given their non-constitutional structure, how can they believe they work for us?

Asbestos is chemically inert and non-toxic. It has many good applications when handled and used properly.

Oh look, Obama found something else to regulate. Killing the economy one decree at a time.

Everything in the universe is made up of chemicals.

This would literally put everything under the control of the EPA.

I know, the local police say they work for and get paid by their government, not us.

Not pulling a police officer off traffic duty, when they were in eyesight of me, clocking cars on a major road, to investigate a break-in and possible present intruder in my last home when I saw the broken window when getting home just shows who they think they work for. Fining citizens brings in revenue, arresting, trying and incarcerating crimminals costs money. Guess which is a priority. I used my car gun to clear the house and they NEVER showed up (Melbourne, FL Police Department).

If one of those advocacy groups is the Environmental Working Groups you can be sure their input is based on fear mongering grounded in pseudo science.
