FORT LEE – The borough's seniors peppered Chelsea Clinton with questions on job growth, the cost of higher education and other issues central to the presidential election on May 24 as she campaigned for her mother, Hillary Clinton, at the Richard and Catherine Nest Adult Activity Center.
The event, (snip) attracted approximately 220 attendees, including Bergen County Democratic Committee Chairman Lou Stellato, state Assembly members Valerie Vainieri Huttle, D-37, and Tim Eustace, D-38, Bergen County Executive James Tedesco and officials from the borough.
"We could've had this event anywhere we wanted in Bergen County, but we decided to have it right here in Fort Lee," said Stellato, citing Governo Christie's ties to the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal and current association with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. "I thought it would be very apropos by filling the room and then some to let [Christie] know there'll be another traffic jam on June 7 when Hillary Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee for president."
Acknowledging that she was "deeply biased," Chelsea Clinton said she considered this is "the most important presidential election of my lifetime" and sought to shore up support for her mother, who is looking to clinch the Democratic nomination over Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vermont, while drawing a stark contrast between the Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns.
"I never imagined I would see in my lifetime the type of hate speech that's coming out of the Republican primary and the policy proposals that flow from that: the racism, the sexism, the Islamophobia, the rhetoric against Americans with disabilities, the rhetoric against immigrants, workers' rights, homophobia," she said. "My mom is the only person who has a record of both standing up against that rhetoric and also making government work more inclusively."
